Mark BATE born 1869 Padstow
« on: Sunday 30 November 08 18:52 GMT (UK) »
I saw a beautiful bible in a charity shop this weekend and thought I would post the details here in case it is of any interest,

It was given to Mark BATE on his 21st birthday in 1890 by his parents William and Mary Louisa.

A quick search suggests his parents may have been William BATE master mariner and his wife Mary Louisa nee DAVIES.  The family were from Padstow although the bible is now in the West Midlands.

Althea,

It would be wonderful to think the bible could go back to the family wouldn't it?

I found a Mark BATE in 1901 that may be the right one, he was on board ship so not with his family but he was married so there may be descendants out there somewhere.

I didn't actually buy the bible as it was quite expensive but would happily pass the details on to anyone who was interested.

However Anna and Muriel are also in Padstow (Master Mariners Wife)

RG13 Piece 2204 Folio 37 Page 25

Perhaps there are 2 Mark BATE in Padstow  :-\ The 1891 entry for Mark - his age appears to be 32

Muriels father is a Master Mariner Nellie and Evelyns father is a "Pay Officer" "Warrent Officer" RN

More work required  :-\

Hi Susan,

I have been unable to find a second one apart from one born a lot earlier. (Was a seaman, but wasn't married to either of these lasses)

1861 none to fit
1871 1 to fit son of William and Mary Louisa,
1881 1 to fit son of William and Mary Louisa
1891 one age appears to be 32 onboard ship Crew Royal Navy occ Lg Sea (Married, b Padstow)
1901 one onboard ship aged 32  Royal Navy occ Boatswain (Married, b Pasdstow)

2 wives (2 families) in Padstow (Haven't found the marriage to Anna)

would expect for 2 families to be in the same parish there must be two Mark Bates but I don't see it.  :-\

Would be interseted in how you explain it?

Cheers Kris  :D
