Can anyone throw any light on the following please:

On a 1923 birth certificate I have the two addresses

Kenilworth Poulner Road, R.D. and 20 Rosetta Road, U.D.

The registration district is Portsmouth.

I can find a Kenilworth Road, Portsmouth - is that the same place?

20 Rosetta Road - I think this may have been a home for unmarried mothers to give birth - does anyone know of any records that exist for this home?

Lastly where would I find the 1923 electoral registers for these places?

With thanks in anticipation.

Selina

Hi Selina,

both Kenilworth and Rosetta Rd's are still there,i don't have a clue what the Poulner would have been/meant
the best place to find out about the electoral roll is the Record Office in Museum Rd,unfortunately i was there just this week but i doubt I'd be able to go again before Christmas, sorry.
there is a website for the ro www.portsmouthrecordsoffice.co.uk . i know they usually shut for stock taking around the first couple of weeks in december so you might want to email them pretty quickly if there is nobody else unable to help,

Hi Selina,

I've joined the party about 12 years too late! Did you have any luck with finding out about 20 Rosetta Road? I too have a relative with this listed on their birth certificate but seem to be drawing a blank with my research.

Many thanks,

MrSaratoga

Hello MrSaratoga

Took me a while to dig out my research on this!

I was helping a very distant connection with Rosetta Road and not having found out any more regarding No. 20 left it to her to continue but nothing more was found apart from two children being born there in 1923 and 1925.  In 1923 the mother's address was  in Ringwood.

I see that in the 1939 National Register No. 20 was occupied by a retired nurse, same name as the woman residing there in 1923 and 1924 according to Kelly's Directory.

Sorry not to have been of help.

Regards,
Selina

Hi, my mother was born at 20 Rosetta Road in June 1927, her Mother was unmarried and her fathers name does not appear on the bc. Through DNA testing I’ve managed to find cousins on my absent Grandfathers side and between us all we’ve managed to narrow it down and identify who he was. Meanwhile I’ve been trying to find out more about my mothers birth and early life so the info about the house in Rosetta Road clears up some of the mystery.

Hi Selina, regarding 20 Rosetta Road, my Mother was born there in 1927 and it seems likely that was indeed a maternity home for unmarried mums.
It seems to have been run by Caroline Elliot, a retired widowed nurse and Robina Elliott ( her sister?) who is named as sick room maid on the 1939 census.

I’m trying to find information about how and why my Grandmother went there but it’s proving difficult. I suspect the name she gave on mums birth certificate was false so I’m relying on DNA links.
Good luck with your quest!

Liz
