Two Miltowns in Clare??????
« on: Sunday 30 November 08 01:07 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if there are two Milltowns in County Clare?  I know Milltown Malbay is certain, but I have come across references to Miltown, Tulla.  Is this the same place or were there two such place names in Clare from the 1840s?   Any information in this regard is most helpful for focusing my research!  Thanks!

2 completely different places M.Malbay is on the coast, Tulla about 25 mile inland.

See www.thecore.com/seanruad to find information on townlands, etc. in Ireland. Change default setting from exact match and search for Milltown in Clare.

thanks for the guidance.  I checked the site and put Milltown as advised.  It listed a Milltown in Tulla, but the site doesn`t forward any further information.  How might I check out this Tulla location?  I checked with google, but not much there.

If you put 'Milltown' 'Clare' (county) and search for 'anywhere in field' then the 2 Milltowns come up on results page. This gives you acreage, civil parish, poor law union, etc.

Googling 'milltown in clare' brings up loads of pages.
This one goes into a bit of detail about the two mIlltowns:

Putting 'milltown' into the search box brings up thousands of results:

Thank you for the information and the web-page from County Clare Library.  The article was most informative.   I especially was struck by the similarities that family was having pinning down the two Milltowns.    Their relative also spoke of only a Milltown, Co. Clare.  It makes sense their deduction that the Milltown in question is Milltown-Malbay and I suspect my Kelly family would more likely be from that Milltown too.  I did find Patrick and Michael Kellys in Kilfarboy parish (I know, very common names).  Also, in the article, it mentions that their relative went to the Springfield area of Hampden County in MA.  This is the same area where my Kelly family first lived in the United States.  Just off hand, I wonder, if there was any particular reason families from Clare, in particular, Milltown would have went to Hampden in MA?   Also, I wonder if there is any way to know if it was more common to call Milltown-Malbay just Milltown in the 1840s.

Anyway, thank you for the pointers and listening to my speculations.

Your relatives quite possibly went to Mass. to get jobs or because other friends or relatives had gone their first and said to follow them and come to America. Did they first work in any of the mills by any chance?

There's a Milltown near me (nowhere near Co. Clare) which isn't even a townland but an area near an old mill and the school was even known as Milltown School.

Here's the web site for a local church with a bit on its history which might be of interest:

Thought of this thread the other night when watching About the House on RTE (a programme about building, etc. on Irish telly) and they went to Milltown Malbay:
