No Historical Newspapers
« on: Saturday 29 November 08 19:08 GMT (UK) »

Yesterday I went off to my local library to browse through A......y's Library Edition to find that Historical Newspapers does not appear to be included. What a disappointment. Is it only available on the World edition? How can I find out what else is not included in the Library edition?

Would Google News Archive be the only other free alternative for browsing  mainly California and Washington State 1900+?

Regards,

KiwiRose.

Thank you Celia for your suggestion. I will try it shortly.

Old newspapers that I have come across on the internet have provided me with a lot of clues about those I'm searching for, often placing them in places that I had not expected and also "meat on the bones" material.

Agree with you about the old newspapers.  I've been poking around in Ancestry's old newspapers for the past 2 days and have found some good articles.  Is anything specific that you're looking for?  I'll have a look if you give me some names.

I've found that Google News Archive has a better search engine than Ancestry, so I search for newspaper articles with Google and then go to Ancestry to read them.

Thank you for your offer Erato,

It was just a general search but I was hopeful of finding further information on one person in particular that had 'missing years' and no entry on any USA census since  her emigration  in 1906.  I have found entries on Google News Archives but not in the missing years. From what you say I gather that if there is nothing on Google News Archives there would be nothing on Ancestry Historical Newspapers. I now feel better about my disappointment.

I'm not sure if it's true that everything on Ancestry is also on Google but it is true that there are some things on Google that are not on Ancestry.

Try a Google Book Search - it is quite amazing what can turn up there.  Many university, church and government pubications and such have been digitized.

RootsChat never ceases to amaze me ;D
I didn't know about Google News Archives, so I've just been browsing.
I've found an article from the Boston Daily Globe about my Great Uncle Morris offering a reward for information about the disappearance of his niece Frances on her way home from school in Nottingham, England.
I remember my mother talking about her father going bankrupt after helping someone who's child went missing. This must be it, the child was the daughter of his sister.
For a small fee, I've now got the article.

I owe Erato a drink, (I would never have found this If I hadn't see your post) but I see from your profile you are a fair distance away ;D ....perhaps one day...

A very happy Betty :) :) :)

Glad to hear that you found something useful.  I'll take a rain check on the drink.

Did they ever recover the missing niece?
