Scotstoion - any clues?

Hello all

I received information today that my grandfather was born in Scotstoion, Monaghan and my informant advises that this spelling is on the birth certificate.  My Mum told me there was a link to Clones, as her Grandmother lived there.

I have googled Scotstoion and searched about but can find nothing.  I know there is a Scotshouse south west of Clones and a Scotstown further away to the northeast but can anyone please help me with where Scotstoion is or where indeed it might be?

Well records were handwritten, then transcribed by someone else....regular occurance that writing is guessed at so it is most likely Scotstown, esp when a "w" is handwritten it can look like an io...these people who transcribed records would very probably not even know where Monaghan is!

Have some records for Scotstown depending on who you are looking for.

Thanks for the reply, which is very welcome, as I was thinking along the same lines but was just not sure.

I'm looking for births for Edward Joseph McGuinness on 23 July 1907, Patrick McG & Margaret McG after that date and a marriage for an Edward Joseph McGuinness to a Sheila ? (LNU) sometime just before 1907.  I'n not expecting miracles that they are in your records but for once, it would be nice!

Afraid not... no Mac Mc Guinness or Maguinness... can  ask their religion?

Have to go there again but probably not for a while.

Yes I would also say Scotstown Parish is Tedavnet.
   You also mension Clones.
Clones a Parish,partly in the barony of Clonkely,Co, Femanagh,and partly in the baronies of Monaghan and Dartry, Co, Monaghan ,province Ulster,
10,miles W.S.W. from Monaghan.

It certainly is confusing, esp when parishes cross county lines etc...then Tedavnet can be Tydavnet/Tidavnet...

The family were Roman Catholic.

Evidently Mac - my grandfather - used to say he came from Fermanagh but Mum remembers being taken to Clones, Monaghan to see the family when she was small and I get a bit confused with Clones being mentioned in both Fermanagh and Monaghan.

Well the cemetery there seems to be full of McGuinness and McKenna's!!! Just my observation walking through it!

Religious areas/parishes differ from political boundaries... and it is very near the border.

That's good news. I'm feeling really optimistic that I might be on the right trail now.  At long last !

What's the graveyard like?  Is there a church attached?
