Hm... Scoonbank is definitely in the right place though.  I think you're right.  Even despite the handwriting.

 :)

Scoon Bank is in the same parish as some of my other ancestors!  Brilliant!

Thanks Claire, that's given me plenty to go on

Hi,

You might find this list useful:

Have you tried looking at a later census to see if they're written more clearly?  Sometimes they were written by the enumerator just the way they sounded

Lol, just realised you've just solved another big mystery Claire!

I found a website which claimed my ggg-granddad's daughter was born in "West Skeen, Bank, Transvaal, South Africa".

I spent weeks trying to find out why my ancestors would have been in the Transvaal in 1800, trawling through passenger lists, all to no avail...

These transcription errors usually come about from the use of drop-down lists by the transcribers. They type in the first few letters and the list 'suggests' a possbile placename which is very easy for the transcriber to select. ESH is the three letter country code for Western Sahara, see:

How about this place?
SCOON BANK, in the parish of Romaldkirk, wapentake of Gilling West; 6 miles WNW. of Barnard Castle.
I was using that GENIKI index of places in Yorkshire.
