John Bremner
« on: Thursday 27 November 08 17:28 GMT (UK) »
I have traced my gggrandfather to a birthdate about 1830. According to the 1851 census he is married to Margaret Ritchie and living in South Leith. It states that he was born in Cupar, Fife. I have been unable to find any record of his birth in Scotland's People records, or with any other internet search. Anyone have any records that would help. I have found no other records of a Bremner family in Cupar.

I also found a death registration at ScotlandsPeople for Margaret Ritchie Bremner from 1863 with the same address. The informant was their daughter Jane/Jessie and she indicates that Margaret was married to John Bremner, boilermaker.

When I googled John Bremner and Margaret Ritchie I came across a rather interesting document regarding the succession of the earldom of Dysart. It seems that while working as a maid in Edinburgh, Margaret Ritchie was an alleged witness to a declaration of marriage made by Lord Huntingtower to Elizabeth Ackford. Here's a link to the Wikipedia page about Lord Huntingtower and some of the drama involved in the matter:

In the documents I found at GoogleBooks regarding the action taken by Elizabeth Ackford to have her son named heir to the earldom there are several references to Margaret Ritchie. There is also a transcript of testimony made by John and Margaret's daughter, Jessie Bremner Scott, in which she testifies she does not know whether her father is alive or dead as he went abroard. The date of Jessie's testimony is 7 Feb 1881. I don't know if this will work for you but here are links to the two pages of Jessie's testimony:

It is my family. Jessie was named Janet at birth, but all the other information fits. I am not sure what you posted that was deleted for copywright reasons. I have not been able to confirm Margaret Ritchie in a census before 1851. It appears that her parents may have died young.

I had found the family on the 1861 census at ScotlandsPeople as follows:

16 Mitchell Street, Leith South, Edinburgh

Margaret Bramner, 36, boiler maker's wife, Edinburgh
Jessie Bramner, 10, Leith
John Bramner, 7, Leith
Margaret Bramner, 2, Leith

As mentioned, this is the same address listed on Margaret Ritchie Bremner's death registration.

If you would like the images please PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.

Thanks for the heads up. I had been looking for Bremner, and not Bramner,  and never found them in the 1861 census. I went on Scotland's People and found the copy of the census information. I would appear that John Bremner had already " gone abroad" by that date since Margaret is listed as the Head of the household. Now his birth and his death are a mystery, but your information filled the gaps.
I was aware of the Brebner web site. That is how I first found the family.
