his name is henry william turner born 1828. . . snip . . . his parents had put him into a home in cheltenham, . . .
Snip
cheers and thanks rosemary

Although he was put in a home in Chelt' his parents did not necessarily come from there.

Using the Parish locator free prog "Parloc" - get it from http://parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/parlocdl.html - I found that Charlton Kings is ony 2 miles from Chelt and in Batch C020662 extracted from C.K. church records - see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(A-M).htm#C - I found many Turners and one is Henry b. 1825 having father  . . . . . . but I'll let you find it.

May be no use but it will interest you.

Regards

Chas

P.S. The info is also to be found in the GLS baptismal index produced by the GFHS.

I looked at the Charlton Kings one too, Chas - but without further corroborating evidence it would be hard to be sure which one of many options is the right chap!

Rosie, the Board of Guardians were those who administered the workhouse and poor relief.  If he was unable to support himself and yet still quite young there is a good chance he will have applied for parish relief of some sort.  If this was in Cheltenham, you'd have to look at the Gloucester Archives for these records.  It would be tricky without knowing which parish though!

His previous convictions might give evidence of which parish he belonged to - the Bristol ones aren't specific enough as "Cheltenham" encompasses lots - although Charlton Kings would be separate, so is perhaps less likely on that score.

Please don't assume anything about facts like people's names - it sounds possible, even likely but it isn't a fact til you've proved it!

Have you looked for the various Henrys on later censuses, to see which ones disappear, by the way?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I'll be in Gloucester RO later today looking at Cheltenham & district registers, so if I spot a likely Henry I'll make a note of his parents and any siblings also baptised there.

Looking at the Archives catalogue online, there is no Gloucester gaol record for a Henry around the right time (this would include people from Cheltenham, I think).  There is an overseer's report for a Henry in 1842, which would make him about 14.  This could be an application for parish relief, so I'll try to get a look at it for further information.

Hi Rosie

I've searched quite a few parish registers from the Cheltenham area, and the best match I can find for you is from Charlton Kings (rather poshly entered in the register as Charlton Regis!), just outside Cheltenham.  It's the baptism that ChasH found for you, and I'm going to spoil his fun now (sorry, Chas  ::)) and tell you that it was for the baptism of Henry Turner, son of William Turner, bricklayer, and his wife Mary, date 24 April 1825.  Henry's brother Robert was baptised in the same church, St Mary's, on 8th June 1828.

Henry Turner in the overseer's records I mentioned earlier isn't the same chap.  He's 39, the son of Thomas & Grace Turner, either in the North Nibley workhouse or applying for parish relief (it doesn't make it clear) with his second wife Mary and the children from his first marriage to Elizabeth, Ann 10, Hannah 9 and Charlotte 4.  They come from Kings Stanley, I don't think they can be related to your Turners.

Of course, finding that entry doesn't guarantee that it's your Henry, though it's tempting, as his father was called William, isn't it?

Time, as always, ran out before I was able to check on William and Mary's marriage.  There is a marriage on the IGI of a William in Charlton Kings 18 Feb 1821, but it's to Sarah Constable.  There are also two marriages for Williams in Gloucester, about 8 miles from C K, the first to Mary Bennett 19 Oct 1815, the second to Mary Leott 25 Aug 1819, both in St Mary De Lode church.
