James BALLARD, miller, Clodock
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 03:44 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information about this mill and farm or about James and his family.  From IGI I have a birth (1770  Cwmyoy) and marriage (to Joan PRICE, 1799 Cwmyoy); can only see two children - John born1806 Cwmyoy, and William, 1814 in Clodock. Obviously it looks as though they were in Cwmyoy in their early married life but I can't find anything about them after 1812, although I have marriages and children for William in Mons after 1828.

The following is from the National Archives (papers held in Herefordshire Archives):
"messuage, farm and lands called Pontlenny in occupation of James Ballard: messuage and water corn grist mill called Clodock Mill in occupation of James Ballard: last two mentioned properties in township of Longtown in Clodock."

Thanks for reading - any snippets gratefully received!   Judith

found another baptism for you - James in 1809

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/cwmyoyprt.htm

but can't spot him in a census though.

There's a John Ballard marrying a Margaret Prosser in Cwmyoy in 1821, and a Thomas Ballard marrying a Margaret Price in 1828.

Thanks Osprey!

I have found a couple of sad little burials at Clodock also:
1813   26 Apr   SARAH   BALLARD   of Ponthenny   7w   Clodock St Clodock   1813-1839, HEF
1816   3 Feb   WILLIAM   BALLAD   of Clodock   20m   Clodock St Clodock   1813-1839, HEF

Also I note from the first burial that the spelling of the farm could be Ponthenny.

Hi Allan

I didn't keep the reference - silly me.  However I'll have another hunt as I would like to find it again myself.  May take a week or so!

Sorry no, Graceland.  Mine went to Blaina, and stayed in the valeeys, moving to Cardiff and Swansea by about the 1880s.

There is a great site for Ballard family history that you might find useful.  The owner has some of my family on the site  Well worth a look.

Hi Judith,

Searching through Genuki I found this website. It may be of some use to you if you haven't already found it.

http://www.lhsarchive.org.uk/

It's the site of the Longtown Historical Society Archive which includes Clodock.

Best wishes,
