Stott - St Vigeans/Arbilot
« on: Tuesday 25 November 08 22:03 GMT (UK) »
I'm currently researching my paternal family tree and would love to hear from anyone related to the stotts from Arbilot/St Vigeans circa 1850s (Alexander Stott and Margaret Miller).  Linked surnames include Gair, Collier, Kydd and Brown (females who married in) and Ferrier, Gray, Swayne, Fairweather and Cameron (stott females who married out)  Alexander and Margaret were my great great grandparents.  Fingers crossed?

My Aunt Charlotte Glass b 1910 Friockheim married to my Uncle
Arthur STOTT in 1936 he was born 1903 Crofts, Carmylie
he also spent time in Canada; was a quarry worker and school
janitor at the old school at East Gate in Friockheim died 8 Jun 1974.

I have looked at my records and I see they go back to
Alex STOTT born 1837 Garvock, Kincardine
married to Margaret Miller 25 Dec 1857 at Monikie
born 1838 abt Monikie died 25 December 1922  Mains of Kelly, Arbirlot.

My cousin livers in England now but we are in touch.

I have a bunch of computer records of the direct links
but only census records for siblings. Delighted to share and
fill out my knowledge on the Stotts/Colliers /Reids/ Millers/Falconers. etc.

Hi angusg,

this is so exciting!  I'm new to the world of family history and having started searching due to a very limited knowledge of my paternal ancestry and I've been amazed at how large my family tree is on that side.

Alex Stott and Margaret Miller were my great great grandparents.  I have always known that my great grandfather john (b1876 m Mary Brown) went to Australia apparently after Mary died in childbirth with my grandad (alexander).  My grandad was brought up on McCorriston (or some spelling along those lines) Farm near thornhill but I am currently at a loss as to who brought him up.  I can remember going to the farm as a child (my grandad died when I was 11 in 1984) and meeting a couple who I have always presumed were the children of the people that brought him up - something tells me it may be the family of james (b1862 m Betsy Kydd 1884) but it is just a gut feeling - nothing concrete.  Unfortunately my dad had a stroke and can no longer speak and has a poor memory so he can't fill in the gaps - and his brother has also died so you can see how I'm piecing things together the best I can.  As I live in Yorkshire I have relied totally on scotlands people and was beginning to run dry as the entries run out fairly early in the 20th century but your post has triggered my hopes again!

I have learned that John was one of 11 children (don't think there are any more!) and I have found marriages for all of but one of them.  It appears that your uncle arthur was my grandads cousin.

I hope this is of interest to you and we can go on to share the knowledge we have of this tree

Hi, yes your g-g uncle david was married to my great gradfathers sister.  I have traced that Margaret and John (my g-grandad) had 9 siblings.  I've traced marriages and some children for all bar one.  I have as yet no details of children to David and Margaret - do you?
