Where would they be buried?

Hi There,
If someone lived in 'Niddry' West Lothian in 1874 - 1900, where would they have been buried.
I was out there today to have a look and the only cemetry I could find  in close proximity was at Winchburgh.  We spoke to  a man sitting in the cemetry and he seemed to think that they may just have been buried in one of the feilds.....doesn't bear thinking about.

I would have thought your best options would have been Broxburn, Winchburgh, Kirkliston or Linlithgow.

I think" buried in yon field oor there" is a bit of a wind up though I could be wrong!!

I agree that I think it is a wind up, the person you met has just said the first thing that came into his head.

The number I quoted for the county buildings in Linlithgow deals with information for burials from 1855 onwards.  If you have some details regarding the approx year of death and surname they have an old burial book which then leads them to a reference of grave lairs.

You can pop in to the County Buildings during office hours to do a search, if you have the death certs it will make it easier but I have done traces without certs and by just knowing the approx year of death.

The County Buildings is in the middle of the high street in Linlithgow.

Thanks for this.  Though I am sure that he beleived what he was saying..... He was even surprised when my poor husband said, 'we have managed to get the certificates'....he said, '(the man) did they have certificates a way back then, oh well it must be all legal then.....naw ah canny think o onywhere roond here......just the fields, they probably dug a hole an stuck them in.......ayyyyyeeee.
So we thanked him for his help and left him sitting in Winchburgh Cemetry and had a wee laugh on the way up the hill to the gate.
