Where is this?
« on: Tuesday 25 November 08 06:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello all

Please can someone tell me where this place is -   Llanfihangel Pont-Y-Moyle, Monmouth.

I have a marriage between William BALLARD and Mary DAVIES 08 DEC 1838.  Father of groom listed as James BALLARD.  Other information suggests that James BALLARD was a miller, living in Cwmyoy.

Any information would be welcome!

Cheers, Judith

Hello
Llanfihangel Pont Y Moyle -and variant Llanfihangel Pontymoile is just one mile from Pontypool in Monmouthshire now known as Gwent.

The Genuki link below gives a small amount of information and a link to some further records.

Hope this helps

Many thanks Sue.  I have seen it on googlemap now, and the transcripts for Mons on Genuki are wonderful - no sign of the ones I'm looking for though :(

Never ind it all ties in with them living in Aberystruth/Blaina later and coming from Cwmyoy.

Cheers, Judith

Could the names be Pontymoile and Cwmniscoy which are about a half mile apart?

Thanks, Sue and Lenny.

The map on Genuki seems to pinpoint it better than the current Googlemap where the church is not named at all.  I found a description and some photos on this site which give me a better idea.  Seems a way from what is now listed as Pontymoel.

Thanks also for your thoughts Lenny but I have good information about James BALLARD (the groom's father) who was a miller, born in Cwmyoy, and was employed in Cwmyoy, Clodock, Crickhowell and Cantref.  Searching for him in 3 counties and 2 countries has been a bit tricky!

Once again, many thanks.  :)

Hello

Llanvihangel Pontymoile (is next sort of village after New Inn and before Mamhilad), and its on the outskirts of Pontypool,  nearby is a large industrial estate called Mamhilad Park Estate with various  empty factory units.

If you are looking for the church St Michaels it is next door to the Horse and Jockey Public House.

hope this is of some help Janine :)
