John McShane b. ABT 1869
« on: Monday 24 November 08 05:19 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for info on John McShane and his family.  His parents were Henry McShane and Rose Forbes. I think John was born 1869 in Armagh. Parents were married about 1863 in Armagh. I'm hoping someone knows something of this family.

Welcome to Rootschat. Three children of Henry McShane and Rose Forbes are listed in IGI (www.familysearch.org):
Catharine born 2 Oct.1864 Lurgan district, Co. Armagh
John born 16 Apr.1869 Co. Armagh
Rose 29 Jan.1873 Dalziel, Lanarkshire, Scotland

John's birth certificate will give you an exact place of birth.

If this is the correct family and they did move to Scotland then Rose's birth certificate should show the date and place of her parents' marriage (Scottish certificates show those details but Irish ones do not). You can view a scanned image of the certificate on Scotland's People website (see www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for what information is on Scottish certificates and how to purchase credits to view them. Scottish census records up to 1901 census are also there).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Found their marriage in Armagh Ancestry, but you will have to pay 5 euros to see the record.
I looked under Rose Forbes and found it in 1863, church record.
here is the web address:

Good luck

A Henry McShane and a Rose McShane were witnesses at the wedding of Sarah Millsopp to John Conlin in Hamilton. (Her 3rd marriage) 30 Sept. 1887.
Sarah Millsopp's mother's maiden name was Catherine McShane.
Sarah Millsopp (maiden name McConnell) was born in Co. Armagh and her two previous marriages took place in Seagoe, Co. Armagh.
This may be your Henry and Rose.
Does anyone have any evidence of Henry having a sister Catherine?

Further to my last post;
I am making some assumptions here.
On http://armagh.brsgenealogy.com there is a Henry McShane with year of birth 1838 - father's name John. If the old convention of naming the first son after the father's father was followed then this might be Henry's year of birth. There is also a Catherine McShane (father's name John) born in 1838 - possible twins!
Well that's the theory folks, I hope someone can come up with the proof, please.

Thank You So Much! It never even occurred to me to check the Scotland records for this family. I had assumed that because John was born in Ireland, all of his family would be there BUT I have found lots of records for this family on Scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

John McShane is the son of Henry McShane (and Rose Forbes) who is the son of John McShane (and Mary Ann McCann)
