Parish records in Devon before 1813
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 16:03 GMT (UK) »
I've managed to trace my great-grandfather and some of his siblings in the Parish records for Awliscombe in Devon. (I bought copies from Devon Family History Society) The records name their parents as John and Ann Bailey. Unfortunately, John Bailey was born circa 1811 and the records only go back to 1813. I have found a William Bailey who married Maria Woodland in 1807 and several children born after 1813. Both William and John Bailey were carpenters. Is it possible to find births before 1813 via the internet, as I live in France. If not, how do I go about getting this info?

Hi Viv, welcome to RootsChat  :)

The LDS has parish records online, IGI, free to search

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0bq/

As you know the parish, have a look at Hugh Wallis' Batch Nos. site, gives the extracted parish records as opposed to those submitted by a member of the LDS church.  (just checked at the moment am unable to log in to Hugh's site  :-\).

You won't get too far looking in the IGI for Devon Parish data because a lot of the parish records are not transcribed there, for example Awliscombe, in which Viv is interested, is NOT on the IGI.

And even if your family do live in a parish which is on the IGI, the fact that many parishes were within a mile or two (or even less) of each other means that some baptisms and marriages are bound to have been celebrated in a neighbouring parish which isn't on the IGI.  Poor people also moved around a lot and, inevitably, came and went between the different parishes.

This notion that the IGI must contain all the Births and Marriages has resulted in a lot of mistaken identities.

However, in Devon, we are compensated to some extent by having an excellent Genuki site and Family History Society.  The Devon Record Office and Plymouth and West Devon Record Office have also been very good at putting lots of data onto the National Archives site which you can search fairly easily and then write off for photocopies.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
Unfortunately, as mentioned, the IGI do not have any information on Awliscombe. Ancestry seems to have been the most help, although I still cannot get past William Bailey born 1783c -1848 and his possible father Joseph Bailey born 1757c - 1813. I have tried all the sites mentioned and others. I seem to  have reached a dead end. I have sent off for William's death certificate in case there is any other information.
Thanks once again.

I am looking for an Elizabeth Lentell (or similar sounding surname) born either in Exeter or Ottery around 1806. She married a William Tucker in Bath, Somerset in 1822 and remained there for the rest of her life. Does anyone know of her, or can search records, please? (Perhaps a tall order!). I live many miles from Devon and see no prospect of getting down there in the near future.

Thanks - in hope.

Hi,
You would be better off starting a new post for your request as this will get missed. I'm afraid I can't find anything but there are lots of people on roots chat with access to other resources.
Good Luck
