This hugely valuable resource is now closed.  Its contents will be transferred to the new History Centre when it opens, probably late next year.

Thanks for the info, Suttontrust.

Surely this isn't the one at the Central Library or even the University?

Where is the new one going to be sited?

Yes, it's the one at the Central Library.  The new one will be in the city centre, off Freetown Way, and will include the contents of the Local Studies Library, the City Record Office and the local history unit of the University.
I will have a look in the next few days to see whether anything is still accessible, like the library's Ancestry subscription.

Thanks for that.

I had been thinking of going to look at their film library to see if I could find any mention of my ancestors to do with Hull Fair but it looks like I'll have to put that on the back burner for a while. That'll teach me to do it rather than just think about it!!

I thought they were closing on Christmas Eve ???

Do you happen to know if the archives office off Lowgate is closing before the 18th Dec now? I had a trip planned for the 2nd week in Dec which may now be in jeopardy :'(

cheers

I've heard that they are closing on Christmas Eve, re-opening at the new site in Autumn next year?

I don't understand why they have to move it really. It's such a wonderful place to go to; the look and feel of the place is so relaxing and comforting and affords such an excellent place to study in.

If I got the closure date wrong I'm sorry  :-\  I was going by a letter I received.  Anyway, it's closing shortly.  ;)
Ian, I haven't heard anything about the Record Office closing, but I'll check next time I go past.
Sgt Tollers, are we talking about the same place???  It's the most uncomfortable place to work in - the microfiche readers are at a height which forces you to stand, something I can't do for long periods, and the indexing lapsed some time ago.  It'll be great to have a new place with good facilities.  Mind you, the staff were great.

taken from the Hull City Council website

Christmas closure
To allow us to prepare for the move to our new home in the Hull History Centre, both the archives service and the local studies library service will close to the public at Christmas this year. The last day of opening for the city archives will be Thursday 18 December 2008. The last day of opening of the local studies library will be Christmas Eve.

The History Centre will open in autumn next year.

We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause. But it’ll be worth it!

I love the old place but it's just too cramped to be able to work and search in comfort.
