Moscow Road Cemetery St. Petersburg
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 10:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi

According to her burial entry from the Independent Church St. Petersburg, Russia, my ggggrandmother  Mercy(Smart) ABBEY was buried at the City Gate Moscow Road Cemetery 13 Feb 1839 aged 53 years.

Does anyone know if this cemetery is still there?

regards
Myfi

Hi Myfi

There are two cemeteries near Moscow Gate (Moscovsky Vorota).  The nearest is behind the Mother of God Kazan on the Moscow Highway (currently under reconstruction).  In the Spring I could drop in and take a look; see what has survived - it's under snow at present.

Hello Malcolm  :)

Thanks for the info on the cemeteries.

Will be eternally grateful if you are able to take a looksee (when the snow clears of course  ;D).

Thank you again

Myfi

I did a little research - check out:
http://www.encspb.ru/en/index.php?pg=0&dir=&level=2&kod=2803920674
Unfortunately the cemetery I suggested (Novodevichie kladbishe) behind Mother of God Kazan did not open until 1845.  The next nearest - Gromovsoe kladbishe opened in 1835 but is now derelict (information available only in Russian on the same web-site).  The oldest and largest cemetery is however Volkovskie kladbishe - 26 Hectares, opened 1719.  It is not so far away.  I will check this out in the spring as I also have relatives there.  Unfortunately, there are over 13 km of footpaths  - a needle in a haystack.

Regarding sixverst, I had some inspiration.  I think I told you a Verst was 1.067 km and that distance is commonly used to mark featureless terrain?  Well, I noted than some railway stations are simply 5km, 7km, etc.  There is one station 6km in the north next to the Ford factory - it was previously a brick factory.  In the south, there is a 5km station and a 7km station.  The station halfway between is the Lomonosov Porcelain factory stop.  Any chance your ancestors were involved in either brick or china works?

Hello Malcolm

Thank you so much for the link, have just had a look at the info on the Volkovskoe cemetery.
Gosh, it is rather large and like you say, it will certainly be like looking for a needle in a haystack  :'(

re brick manufacture: My Matthew Abbey had a sister Ann (Abbey) Freek  who went to Canada and then onto Illinois USA, two of her sons were listed as 'brickmakers' on 1851 Ontario census. These are the only family members that I have managed to find (as yet) with a connection to brickmaking, all others appear to be ag labs or farmers.

again, many many thanks for your help
