hello
i wonder could some kind soul help me in any way.  unfortunately i do not live in england and searching is not so easy, i know  my grandfather died in 1979 sadly i never had the chance to meet him, however i also know that he had a second wife and family in skipton and i would dearly love to find out any info if possile. my grandfathers name was francis joseph woods and he was born in chester but settled in skipton sometime after 1944 with his second wife who i believe was called elizabeth, any info would be great i have been searching for years now with out any luck,
thanks

Hi

I think you already know that this is not going to be easy with so little info - but here goes

GRO deaths show Francis Joseph Woods b 10 (could be 18) August 1905 died June qtr 1979 Keighley Volume 4 Page 0723

Freebmd births - Francis Joseph Woods September qtr 1905 Chester Volume 8A Page 395

A copy of his death cert will show who reported the death, their relationship to him and their address at that time.  What you have to bear in mind is that anybody could report a death - not necessarily a relative so the death cert may or may not help

Also - as it was nearly 30 yrs ago - any address may not be relevant today but may provide you with a starting point to work from

If you want to know more about his ancestry - then a copy of his birth cert will give his parents names and mothers maiden name

hi carole
thankyou for such a quick response, as you said its not easy but then if its worth getting it never is easy!  i have found his birth and got the cert, and have information about him until he and my grandmother split up and he then went to skipton and married another lady called elizabeth, and thats where the trail goes cold,  i had thought about getting someone professional as it would be very expensive for me to travel to find out information but i shall have to think about that one again,  any way carole thanks once again for your info

Hi

£7 spent on a copy of his death cert may be cheaper than paying a professional.  I know it's a gamble with the info - but you never know.  It may contain some family details that can be useful

Also - once you have his exact death date - you may be able to track down an obituary notice in the local paper

Just to add...

If he died in hospital then the local hospital to Skipton is Airedale Hospital, Steeton which is in West Yorkshire.  So if the death was registered in the hospital it show as West Yorks not North Yorkshire.  A copy of the cert will show this.

Smith!!! Skipton & Silsden
Oldham Wisbech, Sheffield, Rotherham
Punter Wisbech area
Stonehouse Scarborough area
Haygarth Garsdale & Keighley
Nellis Hutton Buscel
