Interestingly I think Sarah might have been married before:

www.familysearch.org shows, m. 1853 in Bethnal Green:
Robert Stark Frost (father listed as James Frost) to Sarah Smith (father listed as John August)

freebmd.rootsweb.com shows a possible Sarah August b. 1838 to John Smith in West Ham.

But they still registered their first two known (surviving) children as legitimate.
