Although a congregation of the Synod of Ulster was started in Wellington Street in 1828 known as "Second Ballymena" (it became "Third" after1840) the present congregation was really erected in 1863. It claims lineage with the earlier one, of course, and for some time after the change it fought hard to retain the title "Third Ballymena". In the Records, however, it is now the fourth charge.
