tracing grandparents of illigitimate father
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 20:52 GMT (UK) »
My father was born in Biggar, Lanarkshire, in 1918. His mother was one Sophie Storr; his father may have been called E. Rankin. My father was then adopted and had no further contact with either parent. Without access allowed to the census records of the nearest date (1921) I'm struggling to find information on either of his parents. It's a rather delicate matter but my own sons would like to know more about their origins and my father's memory is failing.

Hi,have you tried scotlandspeople? You should be able to find his birth certificate & sometimes there's a corrected entry added at a later date naming the father. You would also be able to access the 1901 census & look for the parents.

Your father can request his adoption file from the council that arranged it, this will tell you what you need to know. If hes not happy to do that, councils will usually refer you to th local adoption support org. who can access files on your behalf as a relative but they charge. Sometimes adoptions are arranged by church agencies and I have found them more accomodating and usually work for a donation.
good luck

Have a look at the advice page for adoption on the National Archives of Scotland website, It gives information on where and how you can gain help in tracing adoption records.

Good luck in your search.

There is a Storr (male) birth on the SP index for Biggar 1918 but you will have to send away for it.
