« on: Friday 14 November 08 22:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am interested in finding out about John Dick,he had a calico printing works in Kilmarnock in the 1840's.
He married in 1835 in Kilmarnock Jean Gardner who was born in Ireland.
John and his family lived at Low Church Lane Kilmarnock
He supposedly drowned of the Island of Arran in 1847, did Jean drown with him
His children were Mary which I have no information on,Janet who went to America, David ,Elizabeth and William my Gr Grandfather they all came to New Zealand in the 1860's
I would like to find out what happened to John, Jean and Mary and what happened to the children till the 1860's and  who Johns parents were.
In the 1841 Census there was a Janet Calderwood living with the family
Hope someone can please help me with this.
Ruth

Hello Ruth,

This is most likely your John Dick's, birth, John Dick, 12/Feb/1810. Riccarton, Ayr, parents David Dick, and Janet Calderwood.

David Dick, and Janet Calderwood, were married 25/Nov/1804. Riccarton, Ayr.

They had two other children that i can see,
Robert Dick, born 6/March/1808, Riccarton, Ayr,
James Dick, born 22/Oct/1815, Riccarton, Ayr.

Its possible they had more children, but thats all the ones i can find who were registered.

So on the 1841. census that Janet Calderwood, is most likely his mother, the 1841 census. did not give relationships, if it is his mother, then she is most likely to be widowed, because in Scotland, lots of women after being widowed reverted back to their maiden name.

Also on the census John, and Mary, have three children, David, after his father, Janet, after his mother, and Mary, most likely after Mary's, mother.

Riccarton is next door to Kilmarnock, and in the modern world is actually part of Kilmarnock.

Regards,
Jonn.

By the sounds of it, you may not have census info for 1851 to 1861. Struggling for the 1851. Possible entries for some of the children:

Elizabeth Dick, 7, lodger, b. Kilmarnock
Henry Smith 30, coal miner, Kilmarnock
Jean Smith 28, b. Kilmarnock
John Smith 11 Months, b. Kilmaurs

Address: Andersons Land, Crosshouse, Kilmaurs

Janet I think is here:

Janet Dick 14, niece, b. Kilmarnock
James Gardner 28, coal miner, b. Daun Wasington, Ireland County *
Janet Gardner    27, b. Tarbolton, Ayrshire
Jean Gardner 6
Wm Gardner 4
Mary Gardner 1

Address: No1 Fardlehill Colliery Kilmaurs

* As transcribed, original image hopefully clearer. From Freecen it is showing as Co. Down - Warinsford. If this is Jane Gardener's brother, then maybe some clues to her birth place

And for 1861:

Janet Dick 23,  dress maker, b. Kilmarnock
Elizabeth Dick 18, sister, dress maker, b. Kilmarnock
William Dick 16, Pattern Drawer, b. Kilmarnock

Address: 14 Low Church Lane, Kilmarnock

There is a possible entry for David, 19, Railway Works Clerk, b. Kilmarnock lodging in Shotts Lanarkshire also in 1861.

Hi Monica
Thankyou very much for the info you have opened up so much for me,I did not know were Jean Dick ( nee  gardner ) Johns wife came from in Ireland.
I have the 1861 census and my Gr granfather William was on it as a pettern drawer. All I need now is to find Mary, John and Jeans eldest daughter she was never taked about by my grandmother.
I wonder if she drowned with John
Thanks again for your help

Hello Ruth,
I'm very interested in John Dick, the calico printer/ shawl manufacturer who died suddenly 31 July 1847. You say that he drowned on the isle of Arran; I'd be interested to know how you found that out. His will (or Inventory, rther) is on scotlandspeople, as you may have seen by now. First of all, his wife Jean was his executrix, so she certainly didn't die at the same time. Secondly, he apparently owned a printfield on Bentinck Street, in the Netherton, valued at ₤900, so he seems to have been quite well-established in business.
In Pigot's 1837 Directory for Kilmarnock, John Dick was partner in the shawl manufacturing and printing firm of Dick & Kerr on Ladeside. The 1846 Post Office Directory lists him as ‘Dick, John, Shawl manufacturer, Low Church Lane’.   Per Archibald McKay, a disused printworks at the foot of Welbeck Street, used as a temporary hospital “poorer patients” during the 1849 cholera outbreak formerly belonged to John Dick.
The reason that I'm interested in (and puzzled by) him is that on 31 Dec 1833 his daughter Jane Dick (b about 1815, in Riccarton) married another Calico Printer/ Shawl Manufacturer, my gggrandfather's brother, George Humphrey.  How I know she was his daughter is that her 1891 death record - at age 73 according to the registration, or at age 82 per her gravestone - has her parents as: "John Dick Calico Printer Master (Dead)' and "Jane Dick M.S. -------- (Dead)".
George Humphrey seems to have acquired some of John's property and/or business after his death - in the Netherton area.
Unless I'm missing something here, Jane Dick/Humphrey's age indicates that her father John Dick was born well before 1800.  Which means he can't be the same John Dick (Cotton & Wool Manufacturer aged only <30>) found in the 1841 Kilmarnock census, who married Jean Gardner in 1835.  It makes sense that the younger John Dick (your gggrandfather) was the son b Feb 1810 of David Dick & Janet Calderwood, and that David was John Sr's brother, making John Jr a nephew of John Sr.
But what I don't understand is how the older John Dick missed the 1841 census - nor how BOTH John Dicks seem to suddenly vanish off the face of Ayrshire from 1847 onwards.  Which one died on the Isle of Arran?
Any ideas?
John Humphrey (Toronto)
