Cheadle Buckeley

:)My great Grandmother was born in Cheadle Buckeley in 1853, i have been able to find out that in 1879 it was merged with Cheadle Moseley  to form Cheadle Hulme.
my request is any information on a road name from the birth cert it is difficult to read the road name.
it appears as possible Brinkway or similar( definitely starts with B & ends in WAY) but i am unable to find a road of this name in Cheadle, if any has access to old maps or knows the where abouts of this road as the name may have changed during the merger i would appreciate your help

A couple more thoughts Dave ...

If you can find your family in the 1861 and 1871 censuses and they are still living in Brinksway, you can trace the enumerator's route by trawling through their 'neighbours' - this often reveals a landmark which still exists today, helping you to locate where they lived.

As you say, streets often change specially in cities, but you can sometimes get lucky.

I usually compare an old and new map (google maps or microsoft maps are good) with the same map from this site:
www.oldmaps.co.uk (slow to scroll  ) where you can often find many of the old place names.

My now deceased Aunt and Uncle lived on Brinksway opposite a pub called Bulkeley Arms which was nicknamed Bo Garrets.

The area has changed but the pub is now officially called Bo Garrets (thiink it is spelt differently),

My Aunts house which had a yard behind which had a fence and on the other side was the bank of the River Mersey.  The land was decided to be unsafe - so I was told - and the houses along that bit of Higher Brinksway with a taxi firm next door to my Aunts were demolished.

So if you look along the banks of the Mersey into Stockport you will find Brinksway.

If you can find Chestergate on a map of the centre of Stockport and follow it through it eventually changes to Brinksway. Brinksway in it's turn changes to Stockport Road when it gets to the Cheadle Heath area.

Hello everybody - just introducing myself.  Can I just offer a tiny corrective to the thread for others who may have rellies and ancestors in the area: the correct name is Cheadle BULKELEY and for the most part this comprises much of modern Edgeley.

Dave2 - if you need any help with your Brinksway folk, please let me know.  Lots of mine lived on Brinksway Road for years.  But can I offer, Dave, that in the period you want here (1853ish) you may need to access the Heaton Norris census returns, as quite a bit of Brinksway came under Heaton Norris, and oddly enough, HN was 'officially' in Lancashire.  This may make a difference if you're failing to find them on the returns.
