Roberts of Northop
« on: Friday 14 November 08 07:30 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please advise if they have any data on the marriage between William Roberts to a Jane ?

I have him at age 34 living in Tai Newydd in 1901 with his wife Jane, father Edward, brother Joseph and three children Catherine, Albert and Ann.

Can not find any record of the marriage or the father Edward.

Hi Lanson,

The 1891 census shows William as a single. Jane was from Northop as well so we're probably looking for a marriage in the Holywell registration district. Unfortunately, there are several!

Jun 1891 Holywell 11b 351
William Roberts to possibly Jane Jones

Dec 1892 Holywell
William Roberts to possibly Jane Williams

Mar 1898 Holywell
William Roberts to possibly Jane Littlewood Jones

If they were already married when Albert Edward was born (there is a birth for an Albert Edward Roberts registered in Sep quarter 1891 Holywell) then the most likely marriage might be the first one.

Dear Tati,

Thank you for your response. Albert Edward was my Grandfather and I obtained a copy of his marriage certificate from the registrar, Unfortunately his address is illegible.

I also came up with a Jane Jones as a possible wife to William. Perhaps I will follow this one a little further.

I can find no trace of Edward Roberts the father, born 1827 of William and Joseph. Perhaps the census is incorrect and this father was Jane's.

Get Albert Edward's birth certificate to make sure! I'm afraid your research isn't an easy one, with names like Roberts and Jones ...

From what I see on census, Edward was William's father allright - posting the 1891 census details in a mo.

In the meanwhile, here's 1881 but William isn't at home:

Dear Tati,

You have worked wonders here. I feel that the best fit is the 1891 record.

William was 34 in 1901 so 25 in 1891 is pretty close also Joseph would have been 16.

I will ring Mold later today to obtain the birth certificate of Albert Edward.

As soon as it is delivered I will advise you as to the names.

Are you in North Wales.

According to North Wales BMD the Marriage in 1891 Tati speaks of took place at Caerfallwch St Paul between William Roberts and Jane Jones. As this took place in the "Estabished Church" there is a resource which I have access to at the Rhosymedre Resource Centre of Clwyd FHS called the Hayes Marriage Index in which the Father's names are recorded.I will be going there tomorrow morning and if it will help I will give you the details.
