Marriage information - Completed, thank you
« on: Wednesday 12 November 08 07:57 GMT (UK) »
Greetings from New Zealand,

I'm trying to trace back a family shown in the 1901 Census as follows:
Address 27 Mill Lane, St Michaels Parish, Walsall, Staff.
John Morgan, Head, 37 b. Alrewas
Mary, wife, 29, b. Uttoxeter
John F. son, 8, b. Alrewas
Thomas W. son, 6 b. Walsall
Leonard A. son, 5 b. Walsall
Earnest, son, 2 b. Walsall.

It would help if I could find their marriage, which I would presume took place around 1891/2 as that could lead to John and Mary's parents etc.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

There is a marriage in freeBMD of a John Morgan March qtr 1892 ref 6b 765 in Walsall. On the same page, there is a Mary Harris.

Hello,

Staffordshirebmd.org.uk gives a marriage for John Morgan to Mary E Turner as taking place at All Saints church in Alrewas.

You can follow the online instructions if you wish to purchase the certificate.

Just realised that gjdm's post was for a different couple, so it looks as though a bit more checking is necessary to find the marriage you need.

I'd be more inclined to lean towards the one you found handm, as they were married in Alrewas, and their first child was born in Alrewas, the next 3 were born in Walsall.
Question - would obtaining the birth certificate for the first child born give the mothers maiden name? I cant remember when the mothers maiden name was no longer put on the birth certificate  :-\

It's on the birth cert, just not on the index.

Many Thanks to gjdm, handm and PaulineJ for your helpful suggestions.
It looks like either reference could be the one I want, so I'll do some more digging for information from still living relatives.

I have used FreeBMD and UKBMD myself in the past, and cannot think why I didn't search them more thoroughly myself before troubling you folk.  :-[

Perhaps I enter too much information and restrict my search too much. But that still doesn't explain why the two database sites often seem to come up with completely different results.

I can only assume that they are at different stages of transcribing data or else they are using different sources. Whatever, I guess the moral is look everywhere first before assuming you have all the data available.

Again, thanks for your help.  :)
