NEATE Family Malmesbury
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 18:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, I have been researching one line of my family on my mother's side which has got me to a certain William Neate White b abt 1830. His father was William White b abt 1786 and I think, but only think, that his mother Sarah's maiden name was Neate. At this point I am unable to confirm it as I am now into territory beyond 1838 and records that are searchable online.
The whole family originated in Malmesbury and I have been able to search the White's all the way back to 1841. I also have been able to find out that William Neate White married a certain Sarah Ann Sollis (29 September 1850) also of Malmesbury and I have searched her family all the way back to 1841.

What I am now trying to find out is who and where the Neates might fit into this. There was a thread / answer about the Neates of Wiltshire and someone had a family chart of the Neate's. Was it anyone here, and if not who else might know something that will get me those titbits of info that will confirm that William's mother was indeed a Neate.

Here is the info taken from the Neate thread;

"A WHILE BACK SOMEBODY SENT ME A CHART WITH THE NEATE FAMILY TREE ON IT GOING BACK TO A JOHN NEATE IN LATE 1500'S IN WILTSHIRE (I THINK IT WAS ALL CANINGS). HOWEVER, LOOKING OVER IT I THINK THERE'S BEEN A DISCREPANCY AND A WHOLE GENERATION MISSED. THERE SEEMS TO BE A JOHN NEATE C.1662 MARRIED TO JOAN ETTWALL C.1662"

Hope someone can help. Many thanks in advance

Aye, aye, indeed that do be them.  ;D

What next  ??? I'm clueless  :-\

Though I think the census ref I have for the family is ; HO107/1835/332/002 unless I am reading them wrong, I am new to all this!

1841 White's = HO107/362/10/14 (I think)

1841 Sollis's  = HO107/118/21/17 (I think)

The Sollis reference is in West Port, Malmesbury, which is also where they got married in the Independent Chapel 29/09/1850 which I understand was on Silver Street. Was Independent, Baptist or Methodist? You see, so young and ignorant of these things  :o

Cheers

Hi,

There are some Neate headstones in the grounds of the Abbey.

Would they be of any use to you if I took the details down when I pass tomorrow?

Thank you Paula, that is a very kind offer. It would be very useful to know which other Neates may be relatives prior to the 1841. The key individuals for me would be William White and Sophia White (nee Neate both born abt 1786) if they are there........ but don't you go getting a cold if the weather is bad  ::) it just wouldn't do ;D

Many thanks

Philip

PS Just as a point of interest for locals (historians will probably already know who was who anyway in Malmesbury then) on the marriage cert of William Neate White and Sarah Ann Sollis, William's father listed his occupation as Yeoman and Sarah's father was a Miller.

The Minister presiding over the marriage was Richard Whitmore and the registra was Robert Croome or Groome, it is a little difficult to tell his name.

The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Bowman and (X the mark of) William Bowman

I also think after looking into it that the Independent Chapel where they got married is this one on Silver Street, info found on the Wilts.gov website. There was a little potted history of the Independent Chapel on their website too.

According to the 1851 census, William White was born about 1831 in Shipton Moyne which is in Gloucestershire, not Wiltshire as stated in the census entry.   His baptism may well be in Shipton Moyle.

Found this baptism in Malmesbury - 1 Jan 1832 Sarah Ann Sollis dau of John and Hannah of Malmesbury, miller

Thank you Davierj, that is most certainly my girl. Was there any indication of her age when she was baptised? I now assume that she must have been born in late 1831..... perhaps she was a Christmas baby.

Hi everyone
I have seen several references to the existence of a Neate Family Tree chart but no-one seems to have owned up to possessing it.
Has it been traced and are the owners willing to be consulted on it?
