Newspapers Camberwell 1901

I have a death certificate for my gg/grandfather who died in August 1901 by accidentally falling down stairs.  There was a coroner's inquest and I am trying to find out more about it.

I have been told the records from that time do not exist because Surrey destroyed records after 20 years. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Otherwise are there any suggestions as to what newspapers were around at that time that I might try.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Have you checked with the London Metropolitan Archives to see if they might hold the inquest papers?   I found inquest papers there for one held in 1902 in Edmonton.

You were one of the lucky ones, the LMA only have a random sample 10% of surviving coroners inquest reports. The rest have been destroyed.

What they do have are the coroners registers for a lot of the London Districts, but there is very little extra information in them other than what appears on the death certs, usually the fees chargeable to the local authorities.

It might be worth your while sending the LMA an email asking if the Camberwell records survive.

They are currently closed for stocktaking and can take several days to reply as each enquiry is treated in strict receipt order.
