McMASTER/MOFFETT in Mossend, Clydesdale
« on: Monday 10 November 08 17:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any connection to either of these two families to help me fill in some info:

William MCMASTER (c. 1839 - 12 Nov 1905), born in Ireland, son of John and Helen (Allison) McMaster.  His first wife was Margaret McConnell who died in 1871, second wife was Elizabth Wylie.    At the time of his second marriage he was living in Mossend and at his death he was living in Allan Place, Clydesdale and was a labourer at the steel works.

His daughter Ellen Jane McMaster (b. 11 Apr 1856/57?) married Robert MOFFETT on 2 June 1876.   At the time he was residing at 68 Lew Square, Mossend. Robert was born circa 1855, and was the son of John Moffat and Jane Black.    Robert and Ellen had at least two children, Jane b. 1 Jan 1877 and John b. 13 Dec 1878.  Robert (my great grandfather) appears to have died between 1878 and 1894 but I don't have any more on him.

Any info or connections to William McMaster or Robert Moffett would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Gail - thanks for your reply!

I live in a small town in western Pennsylvania USA called Emlenton, we're on the Allegheny about 80 miles or so north of Pittsburgh.

The Elizabeth Wylie that was the step mother of my great great grandmother Ellen Jane McMaster was the daughter of William Wylie (a shoemaker) and Janet Downs.   On their 1874 marriage license both are listed as deceased.   Does that fit in with your Wylies?

How big is Mossend?  Both William McMaster and Robert Moffett were listed as being "underhand shearsman" in an iron works near there, and I have seen references in a couple of things I have seen for them being in the Clydesdale Iron Works - would that have been near Mossend?

Chris

Hi Chris,

The IGI shows Elizabeth McMaster born 24/08/1873 to William & Eliz Wylie. So Ellen has a step sister.
That birth record is available from Scotlands People ref 625/02 0357 which is a pay sight but is very good.

Ellen Jane McMaster married Robert Moffatt 02/06/1876 in Bellshill (which neighbours Mossend)
She was a farm servant at Lawmuir Farm. If you  send me a PM with your email address I will send you the image of her marriage record.
I'm away to see if I can find anything on the census for you.

Hi Hellen.

I originally replied to this post,  because it mentioned Mossend.  It was only when I re read it, that I noticed the significance of the names to my family.

Like you , my McMasters on my dad's mum's side, were from Ireland.I have a marriage for EDWARD STEELE, to MARY MCMASTER.( 21st July 1856-Craigs, Ballymena, Cty Antrim) There daughter, MARGARET, was my gt grandmother. She married DAVID MCBRIDE (13th July 1883- Ballymena, Cty Antrim).

That is my potted history of my McMaster line.

There is also mention of William McMaster, marrying an Ellen WYLIE. I also have a Wylie line , this time from my dad's dad's side of the family. My gt grandmother was born JANE STIRLING WYLIE. Her grandparents, James and Maria Wylie ( originally spelt Wiley, at the time of their marriage) were married 23rd October 1851,Newtonhamilton, Cty Armagh.

That was my potted Wylie history.

Hope that was of some interest to you.

Cheers

Gail :)
