I have recently joined a class at Strathclyde to study geneaology and found your post.  I am Robert Moffett, and live in Paisley.  I have copy of a book "Ballybay Moffetts" published in 1908 which has a family tree from 1720 till 1900 and may contain your moffett link.  I am trying to link James Moffett 1720 with the Moffat town in Dumfries.  I think the family were "planted in Ulster" or were sent as troublemakers some time between 1600 and 1650.
