Hi

I haven't seen the register, but on findmypast it has the burial for Samuel at Carlton le Moorland in 1836 but not one for an Elizabeth in that year which I find very strange.  Why would they have one but not the other?

The nearest one was an Elizabeth who was buried in 1875 aged 77.

Gill and Geoff

Thank you both for your replies.  I have no idea at the moment why Samuel is listed but not Elizabeth on Findmypast.com - I will need to investigate further I think!

Re Elizabeth age 50 living in Bassingham - I have tried to find her on the 1851 census without success. She seems to be too young for the Elizabeth I am looking for but if she came from Carlton le Moorland she probably connects with the part of the Worsdall family that I am researching.  Geoff please could you tell me where that info came from.?

Thanks very  much

Sorry, she appears as Elizth WORDSALL.  There is another couple with similar surname a couple of doors away.  HO107/2136/227/12

It looks like Samuel's brother who is at Bassingham a few doors away from Elizabeth.

William Worsdall was baptised in 1782 & his parents were Albine & Mary Worsdale, the same parents as Samuel who was baptised 2 Dec 1785.

There was a burial for a William Worsdall at Carlton le Moorland aged 70 on 16 Aug 1851 & possibly his wife Sarah aged 68 on 26 Oct 1859.

Geoff and Gill

Thanks very much for your replies.  I have now found Elizabeth Worsdall on the 1851 census and she is indeed living just beside Samuel's older brother William and his wife Sarah.  William and Samuel are the older brothers of Thomas Worsdall (bapt 1787) who is my 2x great grandfather.

Today on the IGI I found the marriage of Samuel Worsdall to Elizabeth Emmons on 25 March 1834 at Bassingham (I've no idea how I missed it before!)  This is interesting because Elizabeth (bapt 1798 in Carlton le Moorland)  is the oldest sister of Mary Emmons who married my 2xgreat grandfather Thomas (above).  Elizabeth was therefore 13 years younger than Samuel and I now believe she is almost certainly the Elizabeth that Geoff found on the 1851 census and also the same Elizabeth whose burial Gill found at Carlton le Moorland in 1775.

I have not yet found Elizabeth on the 1841 census but on the 1861 census she is living back in Carlton le Moorland and on the 1871 census she is living in Grantham in the household of John Codling where she is described as his sister.  However I think it more likely that she is the sister of John's wife Ann who was also born in Carlton le Moorland and whose age ties in with Ann Emmons a younger sister of Elizabeth's. Elizabeth Worsdall's death is registered at Grantham in 1775 but she must have been buried in her home village.

I would really like to find the marriage of John Codling to Ann to check my theory.  John and Ann's oldest son Samuel was baptised in Carlton le Moorland on 31/1/1836 but I can't find their marriage at the moment.  If Ann is Ann Emmons then it will prove beyond all doubt that Elizabeth was Samuel's wife and that she did not die in 1836!

The reason why I thought that Samuel and Elizabeth Worsdall both died 1/1 1836 is that a contact in Carlton le Moorland sent me an email about a folder in the church there which listed burials and memorials and Samuel and Elizabeth are listed together as both having died 1/1/1836 both age 50.  He like me was intrigued by the apparent double death so I must try and make contact with him again with his new information.  I wonder if the original parish register entry relating to Samuel's burial makes some kind of reference to Elizabeth as well.

So thank you both for your help as initially I didn't think the Elizabeth buried in 1875 or the Elizabeth on the 1851 census age 50 could possibly be Samuel's wife.  If either of you has any ideas about where I can find John Codling's marriage to Ann c 1835 I will be very grateful!

Thanks again
Rosemary
