Maney's of Whitehaven
« on: Sunday 09 November 08 03:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Does anyone have a interest in the Maney family?
I have a Thomas Harrison Maney born abt 1866. He ended up in Philadelphia, but was a Cheif Stewart on the White Star Line.
He married a relative of mine from Newfoundland.

Thank you.
Jeff

FreeBMD has a marriage for a Thomas Harrison Maney in Liverpool in 1887.  Possible brides are Ada Mary Philips and Mary Agnes Matthews.   Is this likely to be him?   If so then getting the certificate would show his father's name.  Liverpool was a large port so a suitable place for one working on the ships.

Hi Andrea,
Thank you very much. Yes, that's him, but not sure which would be his wife. i assume she died. They had two daughters in Liverpool, Margaret and Muriel, then he ends up in Philadelphia with my relative Eliza Mitchell.
Their daughters had all the names mentioned in both of these possible wives so I'm not sure who it would have been.

I live in Newfoundland Canada. Could you tell me how to go about getting the marriage, births and possible death records?

Thank you again for replying.
Jeff

Hi Jeff

This was Thomas's birth registration
Births Mar 1866
MANEY    Thomas H        Whitehaven    10b   554

and marriage
Marriages Dec 1887
MANEY    Thomas Harrison        Liverpool    8b   248

I order certificates from here http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

With the info I have given, you have the "GRO index details" or whatever they call it so can order at the cheapest price (£7 per cert)

Or you can order the marriage cert from LancsBMD - searching for the marriage actually shows that he married Mary A MATTHEWS at Liverpool, St Silas.  http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Here's her death
Deaths Jun 1891
MANEY    Mary Agnes    22    W. Derby    8b   514

The marriage is also in the IGI at www.familysearch.org (24 Nov 1887) as is the baptism of child Margaret Florence on 31 Oct 1889.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Good God,
Thank you very much GeoffE. So much to go on.
This is definately his family from what little we know of him. The fact his father was a Mariner and he a barman.
Thomas ended up meeting my relative, because they both worked for the White Star Line. Thomas was a Chief Stewart. Eliza Mitchell was a Matron

can't find a marriage for them. I wonder if they were married onboard the ship they worked by the Captain? They married around 1897.

Thank you again.
Jeff

Thomas Harrison Maney was my great grandfather. His wife was Eliza Mitchell.  I did not know them. They died before I was born. My grandfather was Robert Henry Maney. He was their son. I vaguely remember having an Aunt Muriel. My father was Robert Henry Maney Jr. Does this help?
