Help needed -BAGSHAWS of Yorkshire
« on: Thursday 06 November 08 09:08 GMT (UK) »
The NZ registered death certificate for my gg grandmother (Sarah Conyer b abt 1821 in Dewsbury) lists her parents as :
                                  John Bagshaw occ iron founder
                           and Nancy Bagshaw nee DIXON
The 1841 Yorkshire census lists another likely link including a
John Bagshaw b c1796   iron founder
                     Jane Bagshaw b c1796
                     Sarah               b c1821
together with another 6 children all (parents and children )born in county
 Address  - Anchor Hill,Dewsbury

Also the IGI list a John Bagshaw b 1791 Masbrough,Yorkshire married to Jane Dixon (b1794) at St Peters,Birstall,Leeds in 1814

Assuming this is the same John Bagshaw then it appears he married at least twice but I am uncertain how or where I can get verification and any other info relating to this family.
Appreciate any suggestions from so far away.

Milt.

Hello Milt

I would think they are two differant John Bagshaw’s
For your interest here are the Bagshaw’s from -
Dewsbury Parish registers 1538-1653 -

John, son of James Bagshawe, bapt 07 Sep 1604.
Richarde, son of James Bagshawe, bapt 19 Aug 1608.
William, son of James Bagshawe, bapt 22 Mar 1611.
[omitted], daughter of William Bagshawe, bapt 20 Nov 1612.
James, son of James Bagshawe, bap 20 Apr 1622.
Marye, daughter of William Bagshawe, bapt 13 Jun 1639.
William, son of Richard Bagshawe, bapt 17 Feb 1641.
Jonathan, son of Richard Bagshaw, bapt 28 May 1645.
Sarah, daughter of Will Bagshaw, bapt 25 Sep 1645.
Joseph, sone of Richard Bagshaw, bapt 06 Apr 1651.
James, sone of William Bagshaw, bapt 17 Jul 1653.
Sarah, daughter of John Bagshaw, born 28 Aug 1653.

09 Apr 1563 John Conyer had a child baptised named Thomas.

If the Masbrough is near Rotherham there is also

John Bagshaw, w., & Ann Rodger 05 Jul 1798
And
17 Mar 1777 John Bagshaw and Sarah Shaw of Wath

So John Bagshaw is a fairly common name as are iron founders, I would be looking in the Dewsbury registers for Sarah Conyer nee Bagshaw and her history, someone may have the 1653-1837 ones.

HI

Did your Sarah Bagshaw marry Samuel Conyer in 1844?  If so did they have the following 2 children

Ellen Conyer 1846
Samuel Conyer 1852

If so these two children are shown as bieng in teh 1861 census as bieng Niece and Nephew to one Amelia Robinson widow born circa 1819 Dewsbury.

There is an Amelia Bagshaw as being born to Parents John and Jane Bagshaw.

Amelia married a Francis Robinson in 1852

Amelia married in the Bradford district

Thank you Oly for the Dewsbury registers  listings for the Bagshaws. My challenge now is to get sufficient trace back to align with one or more of those listed.

Also to Wendy my appreciation for your info.Yes Sarah Bagshaw did marry Samuel Conyer so the associated links you provided from the 1861 census are the direct relationships I needed to confirm an earlier generation of Bagshaws.

I marvel at how electronics allow genealogical  :Dcommunications from one side of the world to the other  but more so to those like you who are prepared to take the time to respond to requests and share it.It sure gave me a buzz to extend my records.

Thanks again
Milt.

I have a John BAGSHAW (20/9/1880 - 12/12/1965) in my tree. He married Edith Gertrude EARNSHAW (28/8/1885 - 1/2/1961) on September 20th 1919 at Mount Pleasant Wesleyan Chapel, Lockwood, Huddersfield.

The couple had two children: Muriel on Christmas Eve, 1920 and Dennis on December 6th, 1922.

Dennis married Doreen CARTWRIGHT (1921 - 1988) on June 3rd, 1952 at the same chapel where his parents were married.

Do you have access to Ancestry? Whilst researching my grandfather's war record
I came across a bloke called Bagshaw who was in the same regiment -  the York and Lancaster - and had a close regimental No to my forebear - have a look if you can it  may be worth a look - I did have his Service Record but have (unfortunately) recentlt deleted it in a 'spring cleaning' spree - Sorry!
