In 1881 - Eliza Spiers/Spicer is only 33

The Eliza Spiers/Spice on the 1861 was 21 so should be around 41 in 1881

The 1861 has 2 other potential mothers for Walter if he was illegit - Ellen & Sarah

Birth cert needed I reckon

matthew Cooper (Walter John's partner) married an Eliza who was much older than him (I think) - must find that marriage -and see what her surname was!!!

Amazing, what a team you all are.
Just a thought, my Aunty was born in Long Eaton on 30 Dec 1911. Her name was Eleanor Betsy. You mention Walters grandmother in 1881 as Eleanor Spiers, maybe my aunt was named after her.

Just had a realization
Walter married laura in 1890 -and reginald was b 1886- so it looks like Reginald would be the child from Walter's first marriage??

I think (if you can) it would be wise to purchase Walter's birth cert and
either
his first marriage cert
or
Reginald's birth cert.

matthew Cooper in 1891 was living next door to Walter
Matthe was described as married -but wife was not home - his sister Ada was with him (I have matthew on all census back to 1861)
