1891/1901 look up for LYTH(E) family in Whitby please
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 09:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Would any kind person be able to look up this family please for me on the 1891 and/or 1901 census?

It is the family of Thomas LYTH(E) born abt 1857 in Egton/Whitby area.  His wife is hopefully Mary Elizabeth (nee HARRISON) born abt 1858 St.John's area of Newcastle.  If it is the correct family they were possibly married June qtr 1882 in Hartlepool.

Thomas is most likely to be a Jet ornament worker, and likely to be at 7 Flowergate in Whitby in the 1901 Whitby census.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I am following the correct family here  :-D

Many thanks in advance

Bingo!!!

Thanks very much for taking the time to look that up Tati.

Seems it is the correct family, Rose & Crown Yard is Flowergate and this is where Thomas was in 1881 too.  I'm chuffed to bits to find this family especially being involved in the Jet industry of Whitby!  :-D

Don't suppose you could place Thomas in 1871 or 1861 at all could you so I can see who is parents are as he was with his Aunt in 1881!

Thanks again

p.s. would you be able to locate William LYTH(e) their son born 1883/4 in the 1891 census as he doesn't appear to be with the rest of his family - may give extra clues to the rest of the family!

How do you like this one?  :D

1861
RG9/3648 38 29
Whitby, Yorkshire
Flowergate "Miller's Yard"

Grace Lyth, wife, mar, 33, Seaman's wife (merchant service), b. Sleights
Thomas, son, 5, scholar, b. Whitby
Jane Chambers, lodger, mar, 24, Seaman's wife (merchant service), b. Fylingdale?
John T Chambers, lodger's son, 1, b. Whitby

Unfortunately Grace's husband isn't at home in 1871 either (in fact she's shown as widowed) and she dies in 1873

... but FreeBMD finds only one Lyth* marriage to a woman named Grace between 1851 and 1861:
Jun 1854 Whitby 9d 587 William Lyth - Grace Hutchinson

Great stuff!!  It all fits perfectly, and going by naming patterns I would suspect that Thomas's father, husband of Grace would have been a William!  Thomas and Mary named their first daughter Grace too.
Explains why Thomas would be living with his Aunt in 1881 and with no apparent siblings.  This is all seeming just too good to be true!!
Many thanks  :-D

....  Additional:  On further investigation, there is a Grace Hutchinson bap in Whitby 17th Dec 1827, mother Jane no father named - godparents John Hutchinson & Mary Harrison.  I see this Harrison line may get confusing  :D

...... Free BMD has a William Lythe died Sep qtr 1863 in Whitby

You have been fab this morning, much appreciated!

Would you be able to locate William LYTH(e) their son born 1883/4 in the 1891 census as he doesn't appear to be with the rest of his family - may give extra clues to the rest of the family!

Also William LYTH(e) senior, probably born around 1827 in the 1851 or 1841 census somewhere.

Probably shouldn't pursue this Lyth line any further up the tree really but I can't resist taking a peek into their lives - wonder if they were still living in the Rose & Crown Yard back then.  It is still there today, so will have to take a run over at the weekend to take a look.  The Lyth(e) seem to have married into the Harrison's over the years, so if anyone reading may be connected please get in touch with me!

Thanks Tati

Ooops, now you're going to edit what you just said  :P  I simply missed William out in in 1891  :-[

(corrected now)

Having a look for Will sr in a mo  :)

Edit: Really not sure how to ID him. There's a William Lythe age 28 born Whitby, lodging in Stanton Durham but he's a Brick Maker :-\
