Artwork for William WEBB, Tamworth
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 06:04 GMT (UK) »
I am interested in locating works of art by William WEBB (1780-1846) of Tamworth and from 1836-1846, of Melton Mowbray LEI.

I have exhausted published material regarding Animal Sporting art - much of which is terribly inaccurate regarding the Webbs; have seen his works at Shugborough and Goodwood, in Liverpool Art Gallery and some in private hands - but none have I found in Staffordshire.

Surely there are some examples still in the County in private hands or unknown galleries - it can't all have gone to America?

He painted for most of the major Hunts in surrounding counties, and their patrons; also in Scotland, but where are they?  I have catalogued over 100 paintings by William (Snr) alone but this is surely the tip of the ice-berg for over 30 years' dedicated work?

William had a number of children and grandchildren who were also artists.

William Thomas Bindley WEBB (1805-)
John WEBB (1806-1829)
Edward Walter WEBB (1810-)
Sarah Frances WEBB (1816-)
George WEBB (1822-)
Sarah Alice PEARSON (1850-)
Matthew William WEBB (1851-)
Jessy WEBB (1853-)

If anyone knows the whereabouts of any of this family's work I would very much like to hear from you as I would like to capture more of their work, for publication.

With thanks,

Jill Statton, Adelaide, South Australia

Hi Jill,

William Thomas Bindley Webb was my G-G-G-G-G-Grandfather through his daughter Harriet Ada Hussey (nee Webb). I would love to talk to you further about WTBW and his father. I had no idea they were artists and am very keen to see their work.

Please do feel free to contact me directly.

Many thanks,
Ben Nicholson

Hi Ben:

I don't know whether Jill is still active on RootsChat, but I've sent her an e-mail alerting her to your message.  I'm sure she'll be in touch, one way or another.

If you Google "William Webb artist", then you can see some of his works.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
