Amy,
I don't want to put people off Genes, the site itself is useful and it is fascinating to be able to look at other trees when you make a connection. I didn't have a lot of luck at the beginning but have over time found a lot of contacts.
It seems to be the people on the site that have changed, very condescending to newbies which is putting people off asking questions, we all have to start somewhere.
If you have paid your money persevere for a while.

I agree, there seems to be a handful of people on there at the moment determined to cause trouble and bad feeling, it all kicked off again last night.

Not at all pleasant. :(

I agree with Lynn and Diane, the users have changed. There seems to be more people there who get offended easily and more self-appointed thought police (PCBUBs) and a lot of threads on the "general topics" are squabbles, apologies, "lets get back to being friendly", etc, etc.

But if you forget the "general topics" and just visit "tips" and "record office", there are, as on here, lots of friendly, helpful people, doing look-ups, sharing useful links and info.

I shall stay there for now, but I won't bother renewing, when my subscription runs out !

Definately Bob,

I renewed in May and from memory the bad feeling started a couple of weeks previously.  I wish I hadn't bothered now.

It's a great shame as when I first went on there everything was so different. I didn't use the boards for quite a few months and then discovered them one day and had a lot of help and tried to help when I could in return.

But as I said a handful of people have totally changed the whole dynamics of it.

Every thread quite quickly turns into a slanging match on the general board.

You don't need it.

I signed up and paid my money, but was very disappointed. I think their system is a bit 'hit and miss'. I have made no connections at all. But maybe it is like alot of things, given time and the growing interest in genealogy, the site will improve.

Well, serves me right!!!

The very person I have been trying to get in contact with about our tree, got in touch with me!! Yes thats right, through genesconnected.....

Restores my faith a bit
