I have been a member of GR for about six months now and have found a cousin and a second cousin, plus many enquiries.

I cannot critcise them because I have had no trouble with the site at all....with what I have read I must have been lucky.

Recently I've been extremely lucky and found lots of distant cousins of people I'm researching.  What's most frustrating, however, is finding what are obviously the people you're looking for but not getting any response from the people who put them on the site.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

i have had that problem i think it's when people fill there tree in but don't become members so they can't reply  i think there should put something next to the names to say that they aren't members at least you would know why they didn't reply

I'll tell you another annoying niggle. People who keep uploading their tree nearly everyday. It makes it appear that there are thousands of new names added in "1 last day" for the surnames your interested in, only to find that it is the same old names again & again......   :(

FWIW, non members can and do (as in this case) reply. They can't originate messages or view other people's trees. I keep meaning to join. but ...
E Yorks - Carver, Steels, Cross, Maltby, Whiting, Moor, Laybourn
W Yorks - Wilkinson, Kershaw, Rawnsley, Shaw
Norfolk - Carver, Dowson
Cheshire - Berry, Cooper
Lincs - Berry
London/Ireland/Scotland/Lincs - Sullivan
Northumberland/Durham - Nicholson, Cuthbert, Turner, Robertson
Berks - May
Beds - Brownell

The latest 'niggle' on GR is that if you send someone a message you have to un tick the 'access to your tree' box.  If you don't you give them automatic access to your tree!  I don't mind sharing but not to all and sundry for no good reason >:(

GR did this once before but got so much flack from the members they reversed their decision - it seems they've snuck it in again without warning >:(

I had four contacts via GR in the last week - I now have access to 3 trees which have no relevance or interest to me whatsoever  :(

Gazza - I did'nt spot that one  ???

My daughter and I (who live 200 miles apart) have been using GR for a couple of months now, on the same non-fee-paying account, and find it an excellent way to keep each other up-to-date with the tree (easier than emailing gedcoms every day!). So we're using the GR tree as our primary repository of information - though I take care to download the gedcom file every time it's updated, just in case we get bumped off the site as has happened to some others. The several contacts we've had from others have been a bonus: we've managed to transfer a couple of these into direct email exchanges off-site, to join exchanges already generated through rootschat and rootsweb: we now have two separate areas of the family each with 3 or 4 distantly related people copied into the discussions.

In summary we have found GR quite useful mainly for managing our tree. It has generated contacts - and there are two or three GR members whose trees overlap ours in critical areas. Tempted to pay up - though since making much more progress through rootschat and rootsweb, it's still not our first priority ! At £9.50 it's nearly three times the price of a will that I downloaded last week from the National Archive which gave me invaluable primary information as well as an insight into the family history. Sure, without paying we can't initiate a conversation - but once we've been contacted by a member we can reply without any problems. Just have to avoid using the @ symbol or '.com' etc when supplying email addresses!
