Complete - thank You - Date of photo and ages -any ideas?
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 17:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone
the man in this photo is my great grandfather (Obadiah William Ames) and I think it is around 1946 when he would have been 60 BUT I could be out on that.

Can anyone tell by the clothes what approx year this could be?

Also - the lady is believed to be his sister (not sure of name but we think Pen or 'Em') and I think she was older.
Does she look older to anyone else and by how many years (this may help me place her on earlier records..)
thanks for you help!

Hi Mark,
Were they born in England/Wales? I had a quick look on 1901 and the birth index and couldn't see anyone who had a remotely similar name! Quite distinctive.
I think its a bit earlier than 40's but it can be deceptive on older people as they didn't change with the fashions so quickly. But Obadiah looks around 70 to me

added...just looked at your previous posts on the Ames family, I see they are a tricky lot!!!
Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

I would also go for about 70 for both lady and man.

I think the lady is one of those people who, very very fortunately, stays with her natural hair colouration instead of going grey like the rest of us!!  ;)

Thanks for the tidy Irene  :)

jc26red : They are indeed hard to track down in the 1901 census .. I have Obadiah 's 1902 militia sign-up records now (and he was just called William Ames at that point) BUT can't track him on the 1901 census.. very odd.

I know he was 64 when he died (I have his certificate) so I think he was maybe 60 in this photo.
Looking at it again I think the lady looks a little older so may well be 70 or so.

IgorStrav: she does have lovely dark hair which sadly didn't work its way to my father (who is very white and around this age now) or me (no hair - shiney on top), ah well.

Hi there
The gentleman's collar is soft so likely to be nearer to 1950. ...it may even still be detachable. Late 40s is likely but his pen is ink and is prob accompanied by a pencil. These are pre-biro days!!! Was he a rotarian ? his badge looks like that. To me his suit is post war but not new whereas the ladies dress is surely pre war although been upgraded with newer buttons? Where is her iron? Her hair looks coloured to me and she looks like late 60s whereas 'himself' looks early 60s. Their glasses look post war and 'private' and are similar in style....possibly just before 1950. Isn't it just speculation really 'cos different parts of the country and different age groups behaved so differently!!! Pity we can't see his watch?
Regards

hi Lyndon

your note is really helpful in trying to gauge the difference in their ages and he was a member of the 'old Contemptibles' WW1 association and also I think in the Order of Buffalo which was (I think and still checking this) Round Table / Water Rats type of association, so a good spot on the button.
The glasses are similar you are right - I don't know much about the styles but he may well have had some money not to get NHS / standard frames.
Latest it could have been would be 1950 as he died after this, so late 40's it may be.

many thanks for the feedback on this
cheers
