Hello Marlene

Welcome to Rootschat.  I've got a few bits and pieces on the Nicholls family.  Daniel and Susan's children were baptised at St Helen's, Wheathampstead (which is also where I was married over a century later - my side of the family hasn't moved as far as your husband's).

Daniel and Susan's children's birth references and baptisms where I have them:

William:
ch. 27 Oct 1861, Wheathampstead: William Nichols, son of Daniel Nichols, labourer and Susan Warner of Nomansland, Wheathampstead (christened same day as brother Frederick).

Jesse:
b. Jesse Nickols WARNER, JunQ 1859, St Albans RD, 3a, 280
ch.  31 May 1863 Jessy Nichols, son of Daniel Nichols, labourer, and Susan Warner, single woman of Nomansland. (christened same day as sister Mary Ann).

Frederick:
b. Frederick Nichols WARNER, SepQ 1861, St Albans RD, 3a, 262
ch. Frederick Nichols, son of Daniel Nichols, labourer and Susan Warner of Nomansland, Wheathampstead.  (his brother William was christened on the same day).

Mary Ann:
b. Mary Ann Nichols WARNER, JunQ 1863, St Albans RD, 3a, 283
ch. 31 May 1863, daughter of Daniel Nichols, labourer and Susan Warner, single woman, of Nomansland, Wheathampstead.  (Christened same day as her brother Jesse).

Alfred:
b. Alfred N. WARNER, MarQ 1866, St Albans RD, 3a, 317

Sarah:
b. Sarah WARNER, JunQ 1868, St Albans RD, 3a, 333
(Sarah and her brother Arthur emigrated together to Australia in 1889 - I heard from someone in 2008 who I think was a descendant of Sarah, who married a Zachariah Austin in Queensland in 1890)

Arthur Daniel:
b. Arthur Daniel NICKOLS, MarQ 1871, St Albans RD, 3a, 373

Susan Warner died shortly after Arthur Daniel's birth - her death was registered in JunQ 1871.  Daniel then married Susan's half sister Maria Hornet (who had herself been widowed in 1868) on Christmas Eve 1871 and went on to have three children with Maria, including my 2g grandfather, George Nicholls (1874-1931).

I'd be interested in anything you have on any of the family once they reached Australia - do you have dates of marriage and death for Arthur or Frederick?  I hadn't realised that Frederick had emigrated.  I do have more on Daniel Nicholls, but I have to go out now - be in touch.

Thanks
Richard.

Hi Marlene - many thanks for that additional information.  It's always nice to tie up the loose ends of what happened to the siblings who seem to disappear from England.

I've put together a little biography of Daniel William Nicholls' father, Daniel Nicholls (1782-1830), which I've put on WeRelate:
http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Daniel_Nicholls_%281%29

Hope you find it interesting.
Regards
Richard.

Richard, I have spoken to Fay Nicholls who said Alfred came to Australia and married in Victoria and died at Broken Hill.
She has a photo of Daniel NICHOLS and his daughter Mary Ann[ Mary Ann did not come out here] Bye Marlene

Hello Marlene - that's very interesting.  I would love to see Fay's photograph of Daniel Nicholls - the earliest photo I have on this line is Daniel's son George Nicholls and his family circa 1918.  I don't suppose there's any way of getting a copy or scan made is there?

I shall have to look into Alfred going to Victoria and look a bit harder for Mary Ann in England - I haven't yet found her beyond the 1881 census when she was at home with her father in Wheathampstead.  As it happens I'm going to Wheathampstead tomorrow, but not for long - we're leaving the kids with the in-laws (who live there) and having a day off!

Many thanks
Richard.

Just been looking on the Victoria and NSW online indices - found that Alfred Nicholls married on 1 May 1895 at Warrenheip, Ballarat, Victoria to Eliza Brown.  Can't see any children for the couple in Victoria, but there appear to have been four children born between 1901 and 1907 at Broken Hill, NSW, which is where Alfred died in 1910.  Alfred was a miner.

Another loose end tied up - I'm gradually plugging the gaps in my information on Daniel William's children.  Only two that I now don't know where they ended up - Mary Ann and and Jesse:
children with Susan Warner:
William (1857-1891) - moved to Derby and worked as a slater.  Never married.  Died aged 34.
Jesse (1859-?) - can't find after 1871
Frederick (1861-1891) - moved to Queensland.  Married Fanny Prickett and had 1 child.  Died aged 29.
Mary Ann (1863-?) - can't find after 1881
Alfred (1866-1910) - moved to Victoria (Steiglitz / Warrenheip) then NSW (Broken Hill) and worked as a miner.  Married Eliza Brown and had at least 4 children.
Sarah (1868-1940) - moved to Queensland (Maryborough).  Married Zachariah Austin and had 8 children.
Arthur Daniel (1871-1947) - moved to Queensland (Maryborough).  Married Fanny Prickett (his brother's widow) and had four children.
children with Maria Hornet:
Clara (1872-1935) - moved to Harpenden (all of 2 miles from Wheathampstead).  Married Charles Seabrook and had at least 8 children.
George (1874-1931) - moved to Harpenden (living in the same street as his sister Clara).  Married Annie Maria Moles and had 7 children.  Worked as a bricklayer.
James (1876-1878) - died aged 1

Hi Richard, I have just read your latest posting -thank you.I have just phoned Fay Nicholls who is only too happy to scan the photo and post it to you.How can she get your address? She does not have the internet.
Are you able to search for her phone number and address in the white pages?[telephone directory ] - I don't like to post it on this site.
Here's a clue- she is the only F. Nicholls in the Maryborough Directory. Good luck  Marlene
