PORTEOUS/PORTUS Longtown
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 10:08 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information on the PORTEOUS/PORTUS family living in the Longtown, Cumberland area.

In particular I have George PORTEOUS, a barber, who was born in Longtown about 1817. He moved to Dumfries and married a local girl, Mary RICHARDSON, in 1837.

I have tenuous links that George’s family lived in the Wellknowe Rigg, Kirklinton/ Arthuret area as far back as 1715 (then called PORTUS), but anything to flesh this out would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

this info was taken from details from the 1881 census.

There is a charles porteous born on 7 Feb 1817 at Milnpath, Ecclefechan, Dumfries, Scotland. it also shows he was chrisened on 6 Mar 1817 Middlesbie, Dumfries, Scotland. and died in 1881 Carlisle, Cumberland, England. how ever its showing as his parents being John PORTEOUS    and Jane HENDERSON. they may be brothers ?

Hi,

Regretfully, I do not think there is a direct connection.

Charles Porteous was the youngest child of eight, all brought up in the Middlebie area. As far as I can see there is no connection.

Many thanks for trying.

Have you any other details of the family in the 1881 census?
Regards
Derek Porteous
