This project and the software it uses are very similar to Familysearch Indexing, which I know a number of Rootschatters have been using.

I've been doing some of the Newspaper index cards, the only British record set currently up for indexing. It's an interesting set, and would definitely benefit from being indexed by people who are familiar with British place names.

I'm quite grumpy :( about the Ancestry project at the moment. I have transcribed and indexed for other sites, going way back to the early days of FreeBMD, but I've only been using the Ancestry software for one day and I find it quite unforgiving and tricky to use as a beginner.

Of course, if I persevere ...IF! ... it will become easier as they all do, but my main problem with it is it seems to be impossible to go back to something if you find you've been entering data in a way that doesn't conform strictly to their rules. It was also slightly off-putting to find my first attempt had been rated as "accuracy needs some improvement", but with no way to revisit what I'd done to help me improve.

And transcibing is a pretty altruistic occupation I'd say. It would be good to get some reward for the hours spent banging away on a keyboard. 10% off a year's subscription to ancestry? Try working out what that equates to per hour! I've 'keyed' for scotlandsplaces, for instance, and at least you get to view the whole set of material you are working on, and the community is really user-friendly too. I never felt like I was in an exam, for goodness sake.

So, I'm not sure if I'll be bothering to go back to ancestry. I'd like to find more 'non-profit making' projects to work on. Any ideas?

how about photographing local graveyards? I've just started on that this summer, with a smallish cemetery containing family graves.

(of course, some sites are more complicated in their requirements!)

What an excellent idea! I like wandering around graveyards (I hate it when the stones are uprooted to use as paths BTW) and I'm into photography, plus it's an opportunity to get out in the fresh air. Problem solved.

I guess I need to check out some sites to avoid duplication.

glad you like the idea.
Good to check out what the sites require, too .. I do it for igp, an Irish site, and I'm doing a Co Wexford graveyard at the moment (only another 60 graves to add) ..
igp has other stuff as well as cemeteries.

http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/index.htm#gsc.tab=0

igp asks you for small photos and a textfile of the inscription on each - the textfile is the time-consuming bit!
I know other sites have different requirements

good luck and enjoy!
