One of the family legends on my wifes side concerns an attempt to trace money left to the family and supposedly 'in Chancery'. The money is supposed to have been left by a wealthy ancestor but his heirs could not be traced.
A cousin visited my wife's mother, aunts and uncles, and their parents, during the thirties and forties to drum up support for a bid to get this money back for the family. People were asked to contribute money to pay for a barrister to investigate the claim.
An article appeared in either the 'Empire News' or the 'News of the World' on August 17th 1947 detailing the womans quest to locate 'The Roscoe Millions'. It was, apparently a large article covering half a page, and concluded that 'the search was nearly over...'
Well, we are still poor and we know now that there was no truth in it whatsoever.
Even so I would be interested to know if the article did appear and, if possible, to actually read it.
If anyone is visiting the Newspaper Library and has time to spare, I would be grateful if they could have a look for this article for me and see what the cost would be for a copy.
Thanks in advance and any information, however small, would be greatly appreciated.
