Orwins in Newcastle upon Tyne
« on: Friday 31 October 08 23:50 GMT (UK) »
Anyone doing research on Orwins in Newcastle upon Tyne from late 1700s? Got quite a bit of info from census records already, but would be very happy to share info with anyone else working on this topic. I have traced my family back to John Orwin (born 1786) who married Dorothy Delap 14 June 1812 in Newcastle All Saints with his brother Michael (born 1791) who married Isabella Heath. There is a lack of information about baptism records so we are fairly sure that they were non-conformists but would love to know which branch of non-conformists they were.

Thank you in advance,

Nicola (née Orwin)

Nicola,

What makes you think they were "non-conformists" ?

The fact that they married in All Saints Parish Church
(  a "parish" church=Anglican= Church of England= "conformist" )
does not necessarily indicate that they were Anglicans,

As in that era, the only legal way to marry in England & Wales was in a Parish Church - (Quakers and Jewish folk were exempted from this law) So many non-conformists married in Parish churches.

But in Newcastle there was nothing to prevent  "non-conformists" ( e.g. Presbyterians, Methodists, Roman Catholics) from baptising their children in their "own" churches.

So folk marrying in a Parish Church, then baptising their children in a Parish Church, are likely to be Anglicans/Church of England, not non-conformists !

Rory Delap, son of an Irish couple, a footballer playing for Stoke City in the English PREMIER LEAGUE is setting the football alight with his phenomenally long throw-ins ! (google him for more)

Thanks for your post and your comments. In reply, I believe they were non-conformists simply because their subsequent offspring were baptised in the Parish CofE church but also in the Methodist chapel!! A cousin of my grandmother has copies of the records (new info).

Nicola,

Which came first, the C of E baptisms or the Methodist baptisms ?

Not sure which came first CofE or Methodist. But Thomas Peacock Orwin and his wife Margaret Barclay married by licence in 1870 because they did not want to attend the CofE service to the banns being read...

So staunch methodists, I think!

Nicola,

I am puzzled by their logic...

I can understand them marrying by licence, ( and paying a heavy fee) to avoid the three or four week delay that posting/reading of banns would have brought.

But I don't understand their adversion of banns in a C of E church. Couldn't they just simply married in a Methodist church, avoiding a C of E church ?

Cannot help you on their logic! Info from a cousin of mine who went up to the area and researched it. I know that this particular couple were attached to the Methodist chapel in Jarrow.
