North Tawton Look ups
« on: Friday 31 October 08 22:09 GMT (UK) »
Am trying to find 2 marriages and by extension the maiden
names of the 2 wives.

James Downey married Johanna about 1825 in North Tawton

His John son married Elizabeth (I think Stoneman) around 1867 (tried FreeBMD and the closest is Q1 1866 Westminster and that is Stonenean.
Also in 1803 there is an Edward Downey married to a Mary the marriage would be about 1790.

I checked with GENUKI and looks like a PR search with the local FHS however I did find a census for North Tawton done in 1804/5 which has given me the previous generation. Trouble with PR search I live 300 miles away.

I have the Marriage Booklet for marriages North Tawton 1813 - 1837 produced by DFHS and could not find a marriage for your couple included. There were not many marriages for 1825. I think that the booklet is for the Parish Church so perhaps your couple were married in a Non Conformist church or in a nearby village. You could get a print out from DFHS for all Downey/ Downy (and other similar spelling) marriages in Devon  I'm also interested in the Stoneman family as that is my husbands family name. I do have an Elizabeth born 1848 that I have no further knowledge of, she was probably born in Jacobstowe.

A James DOWNING married Joanna TOWNSEND on 30 Mar 1823 in North Tawton, both made their marks, witnesses Richard Vilven and John Ellis.
Would that be your couple?

And Edward DOWNEY, husbandman, married Mary MARWOOD on 14 Dec 1788 in North Tawton, both made their marks, witnesses Thomas Croote and James Rowe.

I am also trying to trace some North Tawton folk!

Benjamin and Caroline Crabb (b. c1816). Eliza was born 1840, North Tawton. Entry in the 1841.

Benjamin and Caroline are not seen again in any census.

Benjamin most likely married Catherine Smith in 1843, Bodmin. This Benjamin worked for Richard Vercoe, a woolstapler. He was a woolcomber.

In 1851, Eliza is with Catherine Crabb, and Lucy Crabb, lodging with John Scantlebury. She is noted as "wife of a woolcomber". So fits with the marriage (I have the cert) and also with my Eliza being with them as well. Lucy though, is Lucy Scantlebury Crabb ... hmmm ...

If this is the same Benjamin, then father is James, and most likely mother Esther, baptised c1815 Callington.
Oddly though, he says "batchelor" on the MC ... should have been "widower" ... but you can't really trust this I guess.

I do not know what happened to CAROLINE. I am beginning to think she died in the typhoid outbreak.

So, anyone have any ideas where to look for Caroline ... she is NOT in any death records. Are there lists or records of those who died in North Tawton area in say 1841-1843?

Thanks,

Rob

Update:

The marriage in 1843, Bodmin was Benjamin Crabb to Catherine Smith.

Eliza, born North Tawton, was to Benjamin and CATHERINE Crabb, although we can see they were not married!

So Caroline never existed .... a simple transcription error from enumerators notes to the main census return.

Also, interestingly, Richard Vercoe married Elizabeth Smith. So, I wonder if Benjamin married the sister of his boss???

A William and Margery Crabb lived next door to James, Esther and Julia. I am thinking they are related families. Also, Margery was born in St Kew and Esther was born St Teath (just up the road!).

William's first daughter was Esther as well, and at the time he was also a woolcomber. It appears that later he became a police constable in Callington. (Many newpaper reports of cases citing him, although once he was up for perjury!!).

Some evidence on linking some family stuff ...

Regards

Rob
