What ages are they on the 51 census. ??? you could post the reference

If you have not found her birth, why do you think she is the daughter of  William and Annie  ???

I cant help with Scotland I am afraid, dont have acces to scottish records.

You might do better to post again on the Scotland board.

It does sound as if they are the right parents though.

Not having much luck, I cannot see the marriage on the IGI nor a baptism for Catherine Assel in Cheshire.

hi again do you think it is a wrong spelling perhaps hassel or astle ?  can you suggest any other route i can take i would like to trace James their first son was thomas b 1824 then Charles followed by john and James  and William daughters Elizabeth  then Sarah  on to Ellen then a second Ellen and Martha  they seem to have kept most of these names through the family  my grandfather was a thomas hill born 1902 thanks again Carolyn

Looking on the IGI I cant see any Assels but Hassell is a very common surname in Cheshire so it might be that  :-\

Unfortunately the IGI does not seem to have very good coverage for Cheshire, its not even  showing Thomas b 1824  ::) the only other thing I can suggest is to look at the actual parish records themselves.
