Me neither Dudley, I know both my great grandfathers fought in WW1 and yet I am unable to find any records for either of them at all.  :-\

Don't forget Kerry that about 60% of the WW1 papers were destroyed in the bombing in WW2.

Thanks Nanny Jan, I think that is why I can't find WWI and WWII papers. ;D

Yes, thanks for that information Nanny Jan, but that's even more sad as it means I may never find any of the information.

You might find their medal cards; I think they survived.

I don't think WW2 papers are online; they have to be requested from MOD.  Veterans and next of kin get copies free.  £30 otherwise.   www.veteransagency.mod.uk gives advice about requesting a service record.

I found Ancestry a bit slow going but found records eventually!

The problem withe medal cards is that there are so many with so little information.  I need to find something with more information to confirm the numbers so I can identify the correct medal card.

I didn't realise next of kin get free copies.   I was told 30 pounds and I had to supply certificates of proof.  At mums funeral her WRENS history was mentioned, (never told us) what ships she served on etc, I felt I needed to know more.   But if I can get free copies that is the icing on the cake.

Thanks once again Nanny Jan.    :)  I have a smile on my face :)

Sorry kiwihalfpint,

but the free records are to service people themselves and spouses only.  If these are both deceased and you are next of kin (even jointly) then you can send for the records, at the £30 charge.

They do send some original domuments though so I don't know what happens if someone has already requested them for the same person.
