US CENSUS LOOKUP- 1920/1930
« on: Wednesday 02 February 05 22:05 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for my great-uncle, Miles William MEEHAN who was born in 1886 in Darlington, England.

I don't know when he went to the US, but his wife Alice, and children Richard, Horace Miles, and Kathleen arrived there in 1924. According to the ship's manifest, they were going to stay with Miles at 63 West 130th St, New York.

In 1924 Alice was 37 yrs old, Richard was 15, Horace was 13 and Kathleen was 11.

I have been told that the family eventually settled in New Jersey.

Thanks

Wotty

I found a WWII Draft Registration Card for Miles (mistranscribed as Melis) William Meehan, born 26 Jul. 1886 in Darlington, England and living in Woodside, Queens Co., NY.  If you need the details, let me know.

Thanks Grub,

That's a great bit of information to add to my Meehans (who are still being the most difficult branch of my tree after all these years)

Thanks Shellyesq,

I'd love the details of that draft card for Miles. I still don't know much about this family (but Miles was the brother that my grandad talked about the most - some he never mentioned at all!)

WWII Draft Registration Card  26 Apr. 1942
Miles William Meehan
4138 56 St., Woodside, Queens, New York
No telephone number
Age 56, born 26 Jul. 1886 in Darlington, England
Person who will always know his address:  Mr. Ernest Werdel (last name a bit hard to read), same home address
Unemployed
White, 5'6" tall, 124 pounds, blue eyes, gray hair, light complexion
Has hearing impairment

There is a likely match for Horace Meehan on the Social Security Death Index who died 1988 and last resided Ridgefield Park, New Jersey.  A Horace M. Meehan born 1910 enlisted in the US Army on 31 Jul. 1942 at Fort Jay, Governors Island, New York.  He had 4 years of high school education, worked as a general clerk, was married, and was 67 inches tall and 136 pounds.

There is an entry on the index of New York petitions for naturalization for Richard Vary Meehan, 256 Seaman Ave., New York.  Age 30, date of order of admission - 10 Jun. 1939, certificate issued on 10 Jun. 1939 by US District Court, New York City, New York.  There is a Richard V. Meehan born 1908 who enlisted in the US Army on 30 Nov. 1942 in New York City.  He had 4 years of college, was single without dependents, occupation was social and welfare workers, 68 inches tall and 156 pounds.
