Sedgefield hospital records are at Durham, as reguards to buriakls there is a small burial grounds over the road from where it was, but with only a few headstones.

But also remember some people were not buried in Sedgefield but were returned to family members and were buried in they home villages or parishes.

I contacted the Records Office at Durham and got this reply.  I was impressed by the speed of the reply, within a couple of hours, and the amount of help.  I am hoping that I will be able to find out more from them.

We hold case papers for Winterton Hospital (Sedgefield Lunatic Asylum) up to 1945.  After that date we retain only a 2% sample of Winterton Hospital patient files (case notes).
 
The way that case notes for Winterton Hospital are recorded is complex and, although some are indexed, it can prove time consuming to locate relevant notes.  To ascertain whether or not any notes survive for the person you are looking for, you will need to use our Research Service (information and application form attached).  In most cases we can locate the notes within one hour (at a fee of £31), but it may take longer (if you wish us to continue the search please send an additional cheque for £15.50 or £31 as appropriate).
 
As part of this search, we will supply you with copies of any notes we locate in the time available that are over 100 years old.
 
Winterton Hospital patient records are subject to a closure period of one hundred years under Data Protection legislation.  If you think your request will fall into this category, you will need to send us proof (birth/marriage/death certificates) either that:

    you are the patient
    or that the patient is deceased and you are a direct descendant

 
If we locate notes that are less than 100 years old, we will provide you with contact details of the appropriate NHS Trust, so that you can seek permission to have them released to you.

Don't give up!

I managed to retrieve records for my grandfather from c1934.

As long as you are a direct line descendant and the 'guest' has deceased they will probably release the records to you.

They did it for me and no charge but it took me a few months to convince them and I think it helped that there were no first generation children survivng.

Actually it was pretty revealing as he apparently escaped from there and was never re-admitted! Escaped is a pretty strong word as he was actually let out for a month to see how he coped....he never returned! Good old Grandad!

Unfortunately he took his own life in 1936 so I never actually knew him but I am clinging to the fact that he medically discharged from the army in 1916 after a spell 'on the front' that is mental state was probably PTSD. Thats my story anyway

Not giving up yet!

May take a while to get the paperwork together, but I really want to see if I can find out more.  Seems so sad that my great uncle was in a reserved occupation, a miner, during WW1 and ended up dying in a lunatic asylum.  There is some family story that he was involved in a mining accident, so perhaps this could have contributed to the 'exhaustion following acute mania' that was the cause of death'  Seems so sad.

there is also a bit here http://www.sedgefield.net/cemetery.html about winterton burials in a communal grave, you may have to contact Parish council?
Winterton Cemetery isnt very big and there are not many buried there , its kept tidy by the council, there are a few headstones. I have never been in, i go passed it most days
