Hi Androlina,

I would very much doubt that your Granddad was buried at Winterton. The responsibility of the funeral arrangements would fall to his next of kin, and so he is likely to be buried/cremated in a cemetery near to where he normally lived, or where his next of kin lived.

His death registration would still have to be recorded in the Sedgefield sub-district of the Stockton district.

I can confirm that the next of kin burial arrangements etc usually at where they lived as I had a relative that was there and I asked the archivist to see if buried there but she was not buried there.  I found her in her home parish.  The records office at Durham are very good.  Being from Ferryhill and living elsewhere in the country I have travelled a lot and most record offices are good, but I really like this one!

I think by 1966 there would be very few Churches offering burials, except perhaps for ones with a family plot. Durham GRO have very few Municipal Cemetery records, but I agree their services and staff are exceptional.

I believe that where a death was for a patient in a hospital unit attached to a Workhouse or Asylum (Mental Hospital), then the certificate would have usual place of residence noted if the patient was not an inmate, and it would have a similar noting in the burial/cremation record.

I also can confirm that records are held in Durham. I located my x2 grandfathers medical records there. He too died in Winterton.

Extra info.... whilst looking for his grave in Holy Trinity Church in Cornforth I noticed a lady who appeared to be logging all the gravestones. I spoke to her and had a very informative conversation. She was member of the Cleveland Family History Society. She advised me that a relation of hers had died in Winterton and she had managed to view his records.

In order to do so she had to prove lineage by submitting a family tree and all relevant certificates. These were accepted and she got to view all his records. She said that they were hard to understand in some places but the information she got from them was fantastic.
