Susan Payne of East Grinstead
« on: Wednesday 29 October 08 11:20 GMT (UK) »
Greetings everyone,

I'm trying to figure out which SUSAN PAYNE married JOHN VINALL on 4 April 1678 in West Hoathly.  He was then of West Hoathly and she of East Grinstead.  These details have come from a transcript of the Bishop's Transcripts.  The Sussex marriage index says they married on 6 April 1678 as JOHN VENNOL and SUSANNA PAYNE, and doesn't say where they were from.

There would seem to be 2 possible baptisms for Susan(na) in East Grinstead:

15 April 1654, as SUSANNA PAINE, daughter of THOMAS and JOAN (nee possibly GIBB)

21 July 1657, as SUSAN PAINE, daughter of ROBERT and LYDIA (nee QUITTENDEN, as per the John Comber Genealogies)

There was also a SUSAN PAYNE baptised in 1658 to EDWARD and ELIZABETH, but she died in 1661.

I then think JOHN VINALL/VENNOL was buried in West Hoathly on 21 Oct 1680.  I also think that his widow remarried, as SUSAN VINALL to WILLIAM VAUX on 10 May 1681 at St. Anne's in Lewes.  Their marriage licence says both of Ardingly, but marriage entry gives him of Ardingly and she of West Hoathly.  Neither licence or marriage record says whether she was a spinster or widow.  Previously as WILLIAM BOX he had married MARY VYNALL/VENNALL on 17 June 1679 in Ardingly.  I haven't found baptisms for MARY and JOHN VINALL so don't know if they were siblings.  MARY BOX was buried in Ardingly on 17 Feb 1679/80.

I've looked on various indexes for wills for THOMAS and ROBERT PAYNE, but haven't so far found anything.  The Comber Genealogies says ROBERT died before 1691, so I have some hope he left a will which may help to confirm or eliminate which Susan(na) was which.  But I just thought I'd post my query on the off chance someone else might have come upon the above people.  At some point I'll visit the ESRO to see what else I can find.

My 7xggp's were WILLIAM BOX and his wife SUSANNA.

Thanks for reading this and best wishes,

Mandy

Not sure that this is really relevant but Ardingly registers have baptisms for Mary dau of Richard and Katherine Vynall Sep 10 1676 and James son of John and Anne Vynal on June 26 1676 so there were at least two  families then.  Also a son Thomas for R and K in Dec 1678 and a dau Mary for J and A in 1679.  Before that era you have to go back to 1578 for  Vennoull baptism - a couple of kids for William Vennoull.
William Box - the earliest baptism at Ardingly is in 1641/2 Mar 14 son of George and Joane.  The next Wm is in 1683 son of William and Susanna.  Your ancestor presumably.  There is a death for Susanna wife of Wm Box in 1704 Feb 12.  They lost two children in 1698 John on Aug 30 and Mary on Sep 8.  Son William buried May 15 1683.
1779 Feb 14 Wm Box age 58.
1718 July 10 Wm Box.
I expect you have all this.

Thanks for looking, Andrea

My Box ancestors were:
William Box (c1570-1620) and Susanna Beard (1582-1617)
George Box (1615-1648) and Jane Longley (1621-?)
William Box (1647-1718) and Susanna (c1655-1705) (possibly Payne)
George Box (1687-1757) and Ann Comber (1697-1753)
John Box (1732-1810) and Hannah Hames (1737-1815)
John Knowles (1766-1837) and Sarah Box (1765-?)

I know there are several of us out there researching the above families, but so far I haven't heard or seen whether anyone has worked out who Susanna (c1655-1705) was.  I've only just found the William Vaux and Susanna Vinall marriage.  I can only assume the clerk who wrote down William's surname wasn't hearing too well the day William turned up for a marriage licence.

There were several Vinall/Vennol families in West Hoathly and Horsted Keynes, which I'm slowly trying to figure out, but I have a feeling Susanna was a Payne, rather than a Vinall/Vennol, but I could be wrong.

Best wishes,  Mandy
