Baptism in Cahir
« on: Tuesday 28 October 08 16:12 GMT (UK) »
It appears that my great-great grandfather, William Whitmore, was born in Cahir about 1817 when his father was stationed there with his regiment, the 4th Light Dragoon Guards.
His father was discharged in November 1818 and the family apparently returned to Reigate in Surrey, England, their home parish, where they all lived for the rest of their lives.

Does anyone know if there is any possibility of finding a baptismal record for William? His parents were William and Jemima Whitmore.
Thanks

Your need to to their religion and where they lived, check what churches are in the area and then see what records survive for the period you need.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Many thanks for your prompt. They would have been protestant so I will check up on the churches.

Hi,
They were definitely protestant and all other family baptisms, marriages etc took place in their parish church at home which would have been Church of England.
It has occurred to me that, as his father was in the army there might have been a church or chapel in the barracks where the baptism would have taken place. I have looked at the regiment's reords in the National Archive at Kew but haven't found anything.

Trying to find this baptism is a very long shot as I think it probably won't be possible, but thanks for your interest.

Cahir is in the Diocese of Lismore:

there is a birth for that name on the index at www.irish-roots.net in Co. Kilkenny.

Church Baptism    Whitmore    William    1815

The parish is Castlecomer, Church of Ireland. I believe there was an army barracks in the town.

(irish-roots is a pay site - €5 to view a record transcript)

Hi Shane
Many thanks for this. The date is a bit earlier than I was expecting but a distinct possibility, so I shall definitely check it out.
